Carve Writer’s Comp 2020…

Carve Writer’s Comp 2020…

If you’ve got the new issue of the mag you’ll have seen that our winner for our writer’s comp last year was Pat Rowhan and his Insta Apocalypse piece (from issue 196). You can read it below and see how to submit for this year’s comp below that.

INSTA APOCALYPSE by Patrick Rowhan

It was a crisp, winter’s morning when the pair embarked on a dawny. They had been frustrated that their previous vlog posts were in crowded lineups and they wanted to give their fans and followers a glimpse of being in tune with the ocean and nature. They’d need three cameras to achieve this.

Jed had filmed the moment he had awoken Kayla, shaking her shoulders in the dark while giggling – classic clip he thought. And Kayla had filmed Jed packing the truck and making the flask of coffee – excellent content she thought.

They had 50k subscribers on their YouTube channel and five times as many Instagram followers. Things were going pretty well. Until that morning, the world ended that is.

They approached the car park overlooking their home break, it felt strange arriving in the dark, and they didn’t recognise the area lit with the headlamps for this reason. Their spirits were buoyed by the fact that their vehicle was the only one present. They rushed to get ready, Kayla was constantly taking photos, the flash helping Jed see his kit, he’d leave the drone footage for sunrise.

The surf forecast was mellow, but it sounded bigger as they waded up to their waists tentatively before jumping on their boards. Their senses were heightened, the crashing of the waves on the shore echoed around the bay, and they could make out where the peeling whitewater would intercept them. It was invigorating as they ducked and rolled, but they lost that moment as they scrabbled to switch their cameras on to start recording. They spoke to each other in their vlogging voices (something they were unaware of) to set up the scene for their prospective viewers.

Kayla and Jed had surfed competitively as groms, but they had lost interest pretty quickly once their social media profiles began to ‘blow up’. And as a couple, their popularity as “surf lifestyle” influencers flourished and afforded them a jet-setting existence others could only envy.

Once out back, Jed splashed Kayla in the face, and she laughed and sat up – great clip they both thought.

They sat together and began to film the script they’d discussed the night before. They talked about having the whole bay to themselves and panned along the horizon and then back to the beach. The emerging sunlight was starting to give texture and composition to the silhouetted hills and headlands. All alone they’d hoped to feel at one with nature, but they weren’t feeling any different – not that they’d admit that to each, or the camera.

Their filming stopped abruptly as a blinding light brighter than the rising sun immediately took their attention to the sky, and in a moment of total disbelief, a meteor broke through the Earth’s atmosphere.

In a split second, the flaming rock of destruction lit up the landscape like the midday sun and hurtled towards their hometown. The explosion was immense, and parts of the hills and cliff were tossed into the ocean like skimming stones.

Kayla and Jed dived under the surface and swam deep, the fire lighting up the sea bed and debris shooting through the brine. They both dropped their cameras in their panic to stay underwater.

When they came up, they saw a shoreline on fire, the headlands aflame too, and houses flattened. The smoke billowed thick and black over the hill from where their town used to be, and that’s when it dawned on them that everyone they knew would be dead. Even their beloved Cockapoo Kerouac was gone.

They held onto each other while slumped over their boards and sobbed. They sobbed for almost an hour before Jed suggested they paddle back in to find survivors.

As they paddled together the first of a set wave arrived, it was still shaped perfectly clean, but the water colour had changed, and the face of the wave was filled with sticks and branches. Jed caught the wave, but Kayla missed it so paddled into the next wave,

There was no point in staying prone, so they both popped up on their respective waves and worked the face. Jed bent his knees and pumped to make the first section then he put in a big sweeping carve, the rail digging in and sending a plume of spray behind the lip. A strange feeling of exhilaration took over him. Kayla felt it too as soon as she walked up her board to grasp the toes of her right foot of the nose of the board, the board sped up in the pocket, and she shot along the face only thinking about the positioning of her feet and enjoying the ride.

It was the first time they’d surfed a wave in over ten years without photographing or filming it.

They both worked their waves to the shallows and rode the whitewater onto the scorched sand.

‘Surfing makes us one with the ocean. Everything else is just noise’ was Kayla and Jed’s Instagram bio.

It’s just a shame that it took the end of humanity for them to remember this.

ENTER THE 2020 WRITER’S COMP
We ran a Writer’s Comp across our 25th anniversary year in 2019 and every issue ran a story from a fresh writer across all kinds of topics. The stories were illuminating, honest, funny and added a great mix to the mag.
So we’re happy to say we’ll be running it again in 2020. Articles are best at between 400 and 1000 words so we can run over a single or two pages upfront. Anything goes as long as the piece works in the context of a surf magazine. Check last year’s issues for a flavour of what was submitted.

As for who won the title for 2019?
Take a bow Patrick Rowhan (@curled_in), Insta Apocalypse was our favourite of the year. A timely tail of social influencers, the ‘look at me’ generation and urging folks to look up from their devices. Check out issue 196 for his thought-provoking submission.
There’ll be a prize back of Orca books, a mag subscription and some gear winging it’s way to you. And of course, an open invitation to send more words in.

So there you go get your thinking caps on and get writing. Email your entries, preferably as a Word document or in Apple Pages, or even in the body of the email, no pdfs as they’re totes annoying, to [email protected] small print below.

Rules for entry
400-1000 word articles are ideal. We can’t respond to all emails, because we get loads, but you will get an autoresponder confirmation for each story. By entering you consent to Carve running your submission online and in print. We will double-check spelling and grammar so don’t be too nervous about submitting work. There is no cash alternative to the prize or reimbursement for submissions published or unpublished. You can enter six pieces of work over the year. Carve editors will pick stories to run on-site and in the magazine and their decision is final.

Going it Alone Travel Guide

Going it Alone Travel Guide

Surfing is a solitary pursuit. It’s you against, or hopefully, working with Mama Nature to get your stoke inducing dose of the glide.

Sure surf trips with mates are a blast, but sometimes it’s good to strike out on your own. You can’t always find a wingman or woman. Sidekicks ain’t always on hand after all. Travelling by yourself is epic, no decision by committee, no faff with where or what to eat, no dilly-dallying deciding where to surf: just you and yours pleasuring yourself. So to speak.

The downside is you can’t split the costs of rental cars and rooms but fear not, modern surf camps are set up for solo travellers, you’ve got a pop-up bunch of mates just waiting for you. It’s a chance to engage with actual humans, not stare at a screen, meeting fellow travellers is one of the best things you can do. Exchanging stories and tips on spots to check out, play cards and hell, even have a few shandies.

Surfing is a big worldwide family. Wherever you go, you’ll meet likeminded souls. So pack that board bag and explore. The crew below are waiting for you...

Rip Curl GromSearch International Final Posponed

Rip Curl GromSearch International Final Posponed

Based on concerns around COVID-19 across the world, the 2020 Rip Curl GromSearch International Final has been postponed until further notice.

The culmination of a global event series for male and female surfers aged 16 years and under, the GromSearch International Final was set to be held in conjunction with the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in April 2020.
“Internally at Rip Curl we are deferring and cancelling all non-essential international travel due to concerns for the wellbeing of our staff at present,” said Neil Ridgway, Rip Curl Chief Brand and Marketing Officer. “Our duty of care is even greater with children.
“Given this, it is inappropriate to expect young surfers, their family members and Rip Curl crew to travel for the purpose of the GromSearch International Final, when the event can be held at a different location and time in the future.”
Of course this announcement is a disappointment for both Rip Curl and the surfers competing in the GromSearch International Final, but it is necessary to take precautions at this time.
We would like to assure all competitors that the event will be rescheduled in the future once health concerns are no longer relevant, and Rip Curl can safely and confidently move forward with crowning a GromSearch International Final Champion in 2020.

Hamilton’s World Tour Hopes For 2021

Hamilton’s World Tour Hopes For 2021

Bethany Hamilton has just announced that in 2020 she will be competing full-time on the WSL Qualifying Series, with a clear goal of qualifying for the WSL Championship Tour in 2021. This announcement comes just days before the release of her new feature film, Unstoppable, in theatres around Australia.

“I think a lot of people think I’m just here in Australia doing film promotion,” said Bethany. “But my number one reason for being here is to compete. I’m so excited to be back competing and to be back putting a real focus on it. It’s my goal to qualify this year.

“I feel like I’m surfing better than ever, and I think I could do well on the World Tour. It would be so amazing to be a part of it. The level of surfing has gone up so much, from the QS through to the CT, and every heat is amazing to watch.”

The last time Bethany competed on the QS with any serious undertones was in 2010. Since then a lot has changed in the sport of female surfing.

“It’s such a momentous time in women’s surfing,” Bethany continued. “With equal prize pay and the talent that is in our sport, it’s a really special time. I just like watching all of the women on Tour and it’s incredible just to surf with them – even outside of a heat. Their surfing is so amazing to me that it’s really compelled me to want to be a part of it.

“I put a lot of time into competitive surfing when I was younger, then in my 20s I really just dabbled. It’s really interesting to be 30 years old and really giving it a stab, but this time with two kids and a husband on the road with me.

“It’d be insane to qualify, but I’m okay with it either way it goes. I haven’t had a great start in these first two events but it’s such a long year and all it takes is two great results. I’m just staying calm and chipping away at some of the goals. I had a broken elbow injury that I’ve been recovering from over the last few months, and it was tricky not being able to do heat drills and event prep before the events. It’s so nice to be back in the water now though… I feel like I have a freshness in my surfing.”

After losing her arm in a shark attack in 2003, most people never thought Bethany would surf again – but within weeks, she was back on a board. Most people never thought she would compete again – but within a year, she was in a jersey and winning events. Most people look at her with two children and wonder… how does she do it?

But that’s what Bethany is used to. She’s built her career off making people ask that question – and she continues to break boundaries and push the limits of what’s possible.

This latest announcement falls in the same vein. If Bethany qualifies for the WSL Championship Tour she will not only solidify herself as one of the world’s best surfers, but she will be an inspiration of what’s possible for all the women out there asking the question… can I do it? Fitting, then, that this announcement falls on International Women’s Day.

“International Women’s Day is such an awesome day to celebrate your femininity. I just look at it as an encouraging day to be your most amazing self, in whatever you’re doing. A reminder to celebrate the beauty of those around you being their best selves…”

Between competitions Bethany has also been attending Q&A screenings of her new film Unstoppable along Australia’s East Coast, chatting to locals from Avoca through to Newcastle and Sydney and sharing her story.

“Being here in Australia is really exciting with the film coming out. It’s the first international release that I’ve been a part of, and it’s been packed houses every night. Australia is such a surf-oriented country so it’s really exciting to be able to share my film with people who are so connected to the ocean.”

Bethany’s new film Unstoppable is premiering in theatres around Australia from March 13 – 15, and in New Zealand on March 26.

Good luck on your bid for qualification on the World Tour, Bethany. We can’t wait to see you compete against the world’s best around the globe.

The Prince of Wales becomes Patron of Surfers Against Sewage as the Charity Celebrates its 30th Anniversary

The Prince of Wales becomes Patron of Surfers Against Sewage as the Charity Celebrates its 30th Anniversary

National marine conservation and campaigning charity Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) announced His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, as its Patron today in Newquay to launch it’s 30th year of campaigning.

His Royal Highness surfed in Cornwall while studying in Exmouth, and campaigned against plastics and for the preservation of natural environment way back in the 70’s. SAS were formed by a bunch of surfers in St Agnes and Porthtowan in 1990 and it quickly became a national campaign which now influences policy at the highest levels in the UK.

“As SAS celebrates its 30th anniversary and the Patronage is incredible recognition of the progress and achievements the organisation has made over the last three decades to protect our ocean.”

His Royal Highness, The Duke of Cornwall attended Surfers Against Sewage’s special 30th anniversary event in Cornwall on Friday 6th March, held at the Skol Nansledan, Newquay where his patronage was officially announced. As part of the event, the His Royal Highness signed a unique surfboard, created from wood from his Highgrove Estate, to commemorate the anniversary.

The charity was founded in May 1990 in response to chronic and widespread sewage pollution of the UK coastline. At that time, only a quarter of UK beaches would have passed the minimum bathing water standards we now have in place. Today over 98% of UK beaches meet these standards, which is an amazing success story for our ocean, beaches and everyone that enjoys the country’s beautiful coastline for surfing, swimming, sailing and recreation in our great maritime nation. The charity’s work represents a powerful example of positive environmental activism leading to dramatic and tangible conservation success, and provides a powerful story of hope for some of the biggest issues our ocean faces today, from plastic pollution to climate change.

Surfers Against Sewage first worked with His Royal Highness in 2015, when it organised the Ocean Plastic Awareness Day in Newquay, Cornwall. The charity was delighted to welcome The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall to Fistral Beach during their annual summer visit to Cornwall to demonstrate how community action in the county was bringing together many thousands of people to help combat the menace of marine plastic pollution. The Ocean Plastics Awareness Day gave NGOs, local and national government and industry an opportunity to commit to exploring and delivering pilot schemes to prevent the flow of plastics to local beaches and recycle plastic waste removed by local beach cleans. The event also saw the launch of a Statement of Intent signed by participating NGOs, local government, academia and businesses to explore, develop and deliver plastic reduction and circular economy initiatives including deposit return schemes; refill initiatives and the recycling of marine plastics. These projects and behaviour change campaigns have grown dramatically since the event and have become firmly embedded in society’s expectations and behaviour.

His Royal Highness has been a longstanding advocate of Deposit Return Schemes as a way of reducing plastic bottle pollution, and the charity successfully spearheaded the call for the system to be introduced in the UK, which will start to come into force from 2021, in Scotland.

The team was honoured when Their Royal Highnesses visited their headquarters in the summer of 2018, for a follow up event promoting the solutions to plastic pollution, which highlighted just how much progress is being made across society by individuals, communities and businesses.

Hugo Tagholm, Chief Executive of Surfers Against Sewage says: “We have been thrilled to work closely with His Royal Highness over the last few years, to highlight the plight of our ocean and to promote positive, sustainable solutions for a bluer future, where the ocean truly thrives again. I would like to welcome His Royal Highness as our first Patron in such an auspicious year for us where we celebrate 30 years of positive and hopeful activism that is delivering real change to protect our beaches, coastline and ocean for everyone.

As we start the new UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, Surfers Against Sewage is more committed than ever before to deliver a thriving ocean with our community of ocean activists right around the UK. We believe in a journey of radical hope for our seas, and to have the support of His Royal Highness will help us take our mission and impact to new levels in the coming years.

We’d like to say a huge thank you to His Royal Highness, not just for jumping on board with Surfers Against Sewage, but also for his longstanding and pioneering work on the environmental agenda, which is truly causing waves of change around the globe. His support for the charity since 2015 has helped us deliver so much more impact, and his Patronage will certainly help us deliver even more for Planet Ocean in the years to come.”

Surfers Against Sewage is proud to work with over 100,000 community volunteers around the UK, protecting our beaches for the future. The charity founded the Plastic Free Community movement, now active in 650 locations nationwide, and the Plastic Free Schools initiative which will reach 1.3 million school children in 2020. The charity will be rolling out an ambitious programme of marine conservation in 2020, and setting out a vision for the decade ahead, tackling issues including plastic pollution, climate change, habitat loss and water pollution.
