As the temperatures drop and the swells start rolling in, a warm, flexible wetsuit is one of the most important pieces of kit a surfer needs. From lightweight, high-performance suits to fully-lined winter armour, the Carve Winter Wetsuit Guide looks at what’s on offer and what to consider when choosing your next suit for the winter ahead.
Tips for choosing a Winter Wetsuit
Wetsuit technology continues to move forward, with warmer linings, more flexible materials, improved seam construction and increasingly sophisticated entry systems. But the warmest or most expensive suit isn't necessarily the right one for you. Fit, where you surf and how much time you spend in the water all matter.
1. Get the fit right Fit
is everything, particularly in winter. Your wetsuit should sit snugly against your body with no obvious gaps or loose areas where cold water can collect, but it shouldn't restrict your shoulders or paddling. A well-fitting suit traps a thin layer of water and helps maintain body heat; a bad-fitting one can flush every time you duck dive.
2. Choose the right thickness
For most UK winter surfing, a 5/4mm or 5/4/3mm suit is the standard starting point, although exactly what you need will depend on where you surf, how much you feel the cold and how long you stay in the water. Further north and through the coldest months, extra insulation can make a huge difference.
3. Look beyond thickness
Millimetres only tell part of the story. Modern thermal linings, insulating materials and improved construction mean two wetsuits of the same thickness can feel very different in the water. Look at where the thermal lining is positioned and how the suit balances warmth with weight and flexibility.

4. Don't sacrifice flexibility
Winter suits are naturally heavier than summer wetsuits, but they shouldn't leave you fighting the rubber. Stretch through the shoulders, chest and arms is particularly important for paddling. The best winter suits combine serious insulation through the core with flexibility where you need movement most.
5. Pay attention to seams
Keeping cold water out is crucial. Glued and blind-stitched seams, internal taping and other sealed-seam constructions help reduce water penetration while adding durability. Check the quality of the seams and reinforcement around high-stress areas such as the knees, crotch and underarms.
6. Consider the entry system
Chest-zip and zipper-less suits reduce flushing and offer excellent freedom of movement, while back-zips are generally easier to get in and out of – something worth considering when you're changing with freezing hands in a windswept car park. The best option comes down to fit and personal preference.
7. Think about the whole winter set-up
Your wetsuit is only part of the equation. A good hood, boots and gloves can transform a chilly session. Some surfers prefer an integrated hooded suit for maximum warmth and minimal flushing, while others like the versatility of a separate hood. Make sure boots and gloves fit properly too – too tight and they can restrict circulation, making you feel colder.

How to preserve your wetsuit
Follow these tips to help look after your wetsuit between surfs.
1. Rinse with fresh water
After every surf, rinse your wetsuit with cold, fresh water to remove salt, sand, and bacteria that can damage the neoprene over time. Avoid rinsing it in hot water, as hot water can break down the materials.
2. Dry it properly
Hang your wetsuit on a wide hanger or fold it over the waist rather than hanging it by the shoulders (check out C-Monsta for great drying hangers). Always dry it in the shade, as direct sunlight weakens neoprene.
3. Store it carefully
When you’re not using it, keep your wetsuit away from sunlight. Also avoid keeping it folded for long periods, as this can create creases in the neoprene.
4. Turn It inside out first
When drying, turn the wetsuit inside out first to dry the inner lining. Once the inside is dry, flip it back to finish drying the outside.
6. Use a changing mat
Avoid standing on gravel and stones when you’re changing which can damage your wetsuit. If you’re changing in a car park then invest in a changing mat.
