Rip Curl Pro Anglet

Rip Curl Pro Anglet

The 2021 QS1,000 Rip Curl Pro Anglet is just around the corner and with it the start of the 2021/22 European Qualifying Series (QS) season. The event is scheduled from August 24-29 in the beautiful town of Anglet in the French Basque Country.
It’s the sixth edition of what has become a surfer and fan-favorite event thanks to the quality of the venue, waves and the general laid back vibe of Anglet. Each year the best surfers from all over Europe set up camp on any of the numerous Nouvelle-Aquitaine coastline spots in search for the perfect training ground. By the end of August, they descend on the Chambre d’Amour beachbreak where they’re met with fun summer conditions.
The competition is fierce and this year will be no different. The very best of European surfing will be there fighting for the event win and a solid start in their qualifying campaign for the 2022 Challenger Series.

Reigning European Champions Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) and Leticia Canales Bilbao (ESP) will headline the rosters alongside former Championship Tour athletes Joan Duru (FRA) and Aritz Aranburu (ESP). An army of perennial QS standouts and the best young up-and-comers will complete the 120 Men and 56 Women fields next week.
It’s also the first event back in Europe after the Tokyo Olympic Games, and the public can look forward to watching Olympians Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR), Leon Glatzer (DEU), Anat Lelior (ISR), Yolanda Hopkins (PRT), Teresa Bonvalot (PRT) and Pauline Ado (FRA) compete in Anglet.

Rising young talent Kai Odriozola (ESP) and Sophia Medina (BRA), the sister of two-time World Champion Gabriel Medina, have been awarded wildcards into the event.

15 year-old Odriozola is the oldest of two Basque brothers who burst onto the junior scene this year, and he’s already making waves, currently sitting in second position on the regional Under-18 rankings.

At 16, Sophia Medina is also only starting to show up at events but already collecting accolades for her progressive surfing. Although points from this event won’t count towards her regional qualifying campaign, Medina will rack up experience against an unfamiliar field at a new location.

Season-Long Race for Challenger Series Qualification Starts in France
The 2021/22 European Qualifying Series started in July and will wrap up on April 10, 2022 before the brand new, full Challenger Series (CS) schedule gets underway. The Top 9 Men and 7 Women on the European rankings plus a wildcard in each field will get a seat at the CS table and a shot at qualifying for the ultimate battleground, the Championship Tour.

Between now and then, surfers will compete at various locations across the continent and beyond with events returning to the Azores, France, Portugal, Spain and more. All the events, dates are subject to change due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions in various countries.

For the first time, the final two days of competition at the Rip Curl Pro Anglet will be webcast LIVE on WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL’s YouTube channel, and the WSL Qualifying Series Facebook page with English commentary. Event broadcast partner MCS Extrême will feature the event LIVE with French commentary for the final two days as well.

“So far we’ve managed to put £40,000 direct into the pockets of our athletes helping them with coaching, equipment, competition and travel costs. Huge thanks to SportsAid for making this possible.

“SportsAid’s recognition of surfing is another step in the right direction for English Surfing” says Ben Powis, Surfing England CEO. ‘

“We’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get all the right structures and processes in place to help bring more investment into surfing. We’re now starting to see the benefits and I’m so stoked for the first 11 athletes funded through this programme.

“It’s not just cash, but the knowledge their talent and determination is being recognised, that we believe in them, that SportAid believes in them and that they can and should believe in themselves.’

Jamie Wride the Dryrobe Team England Juniors co-manager says

‘This support is making a huge difference to our athletes, it’s been a challenging 18 months for everyone with restrictions on training, travel and competitions and these awards are a massive boost to everyone. They mean that they can get the right coaching and equipment as we start planning of next years junior world champs in El Salvador. This is the first time our surfers have received public funding and it gives validation to everything they are working towards.’

‘Backing The Best has been designed to give a helping hand to those who need it – so that ability and attitude are the only criteria for success, and not money.’ says Phil Smith, Sport England’s Director of Sport.

“Ultimately, we want our national teams to be truly representative of our country, rather than just those that can afford to reach the top. We are incredibly proud of our supported athletes.’

Skateistan / Vans

Olympic Skateboarding Silver Medalist Pedro Barros Reflects on Skateboarding’s Life-changing Moments in Final Chapter of Vans and Skateistan Campaign.

In the final chapter of Vans’ “Where It Starts” summer campaign with Skateistan, the award-winning non-profit organization driven by skateboarding, Brazilian skateboarding icon and now, world’s first Olympic silver medalist in Park Skateboarding, Pedro Barros shares his passionate ode to skateboarding and its lasting impression on his life and career.

“Skateboarding, especially in a kid’s life, it is a life changer,” Barros said. “But skateboarding, the culture, the people around it, the skateboarders—that changed me 100%.”

An extraordinary case of an athlete who was truly born for the sport, clips of a young Barros are featured in the video, illustrating his lifelong commitment and dedication to the culture and community of skateboarding.

Pedro Barros with his friends and skate community in Brazil

Pedro Barros made his glorious run in Tokyo this past month at the 2021 Olympic Games and ended up taking home Brazil’s first-ever Silver medal in park skateboarding. A dream come true, Barros continues to be a beacon for skateboarders worldwide, inspiring new audiences to honor the culture just as much as the sport itself.

Vans and Skateistan launched the “Where It Starts” campaign this past June on Go Skateboarding Day, to share with fans the true elements of what makes skateboarding so special—the streets, skateparks, backyard pools and communities that built skateboarding from the ground up. The campaign will raise $200K in support of Skateistan, to continue bringing skateboarding education and programming to youth communities in Afghanistan, Cambodia, South Africa and beyond. $10 USD from every pair of Vans Custom Skate Classics purchased from Vans on Vans.com/customs from June 21 to August 30 will be donated to Tides Foundation to support Skateistan’s efforts.

Skateistan dedicates resources to groups often excluded from sports and educational opportunities, especially girls, children living with disabilities and those from low-income backgrounds. With support from their global network, The Goodpush Alliance, the non-profit supports growth and development of the skateboard community all over the world, celebrating the unique culture of skateboarders and their creative self-expression.
