Surfers’ Dharma: Water People Living Their Purpose

Surfers’ Dharma: Water People Living Their Purpose

A new Kickstarter campaign has been launched to support an impact driven surf docuseries called “Surfers’ Dharma”

Co Producer Melissa Olgun says ” We are documenting talented surfers who are living their purpose and making an impact. It is a call to action to the surf community and to all of us, really, to look within and step up as ambassadors of the planet and give back.

“The series was born out of the desire to create lasting change. As watermen and women who spend hours of our time in the ocean, surfers are in a way on the frontline of the environmental crisis and other worldly issues and therefore, we felt, a good initial audience.

“Our mission with creating this series is to empower people to step into their unique gifts, shed light on conversations too little shared in the surf media, and support organisations who are already making an impact.

“Through this series we will shine light on conversations that deserve more attention including but not limited to: mental health, addiction, the power of mindfulness and meditation, the rise of women and equality, the importance of Indigenous wisdom, the shadow sides of the industry, permaculture and going zero waste, and more.

“We believe in the stories we feature will have the potential to create lasting change in terms of global sustainability, mindset, and awareness. We plan to connect with as many other Earth conscious, people conscious organisations in order to uplift them and collectively work together towards a healthier planet.”

The Kickstarter campaign is now up and ends April 11th. Check out the trailer to learn more about the project.

Retro Surf Gold – 8mm Magic

In 1973, hobbyist filmmaker, David Barnes, and his girlfriend Judy, went on a surf trip to Seal Rocks on the NSW mid-North Coast. David filmed it all on his 8mm movie camera and then cut an edit when he got back. Fast forward to 2021. David’s daughter, Belinda, decides to surprise her father with a 70th birthday gift – a restored and remastered version of her father’s old movie, complete with soundtrack. This was a special project for Scanned and Secure and I hope you enjoy this beautiful film with insightful and iconic footage from life in 1973.

Lucas Chumbo VS Nazaré

Lucas Chumbo VS Nazaré

This was the day Lucas Chumbo surfed the biggest wave of his life. And apparently, not only the biggest wave of his life, but the biggest wave ever surfed! Unofficial measurements are already beginning to appear in which there is talk of 29.67 meters in height (97,3ft tall), which would exceed the record set by Rodrigo Koxa on November 8, 2017 with 24.38 meters. Many people managed to film this wave that could enter the Guinness World Records, but very few had the opportunity to experience the preview of a unique day with Lucas from the inside. As you can see, big wave surfing is not just about grabbing his board and hitting the water. Many preparations are necessary to surf in Nazaré and Lucas does it with a calmness that sets him apart from the rest. Not only is a lot of work required out of the water. Finding the wave, being in the exact place where it breaks and that your partner manages to position you well is a job that takes years of preparation. That is why the recognition is not only for how the wave is surfed, but for all the work that is behind those seconds that the wave itself lasts. Also a great recognition for the pilots. In this case, his partner Ian Cosenza.
