Boots: A good pair of boots is a must. Leaky boots lead to freezing feet and make you feel cold. Warm boots make life much easier and nicer!
Hood: Who likes an ice cream headache? No one! Hoods have come a long way since the caps of old. With softer, stretchier materials, ergonomic fit and flush proofing, they not only keep your head warm, but just as importantly they cover your ears, and help prevent surfer’s ear. Try a few on and find your perfect fit.
Gloves: Quality gloves can feel like an extra kilo per hand when you’re paddling. Luckily, these days you have choice of five-fingered, mitts and ‘claw’ gloves made from light materials that don’t suck up half the ocean. Again fit and preference is key, so try them on if you can.
Buy a good suit: Sounds obvious, but I still see people in the wrong wetsuits or complaining they are cold because they are surfing in old, leaky wetsuits. Pick the right suit for your water temperature. Err on the side of warmth if you have a choice. As always, a good fit is key so try them on! Check the thickness and distribution. If your suit is leaky take it to a repair expert for an assessment. Repairs are really cost effective, and if they can’t repair it, then invest in another.
Changing mats: Swear by these now. Years of changing on cold icey ground are gone. They make a massive difference to changing, pre-surf warmth and recovery from the cold, as they insulate your feet and prevent heat seeping out. Also, they protect your wetty, which means it lasts longer.
Get a robe: Often, getting out of the car is half the battle in winter. A good coldwater surf robe is a must. Three-quarter length and waterproof, they keep you warm and happy, and are like armour in gales, sideways rain and blizzards. If you are already cold and miserable, it makes changing a huge effort. Any fool can be uncomfortable, wise men and women surf longer.
