The Skeleton Bay Shootout

The Skeleton Bay Shootout

The inaugural Skeleton Bay Shootout presented by Monster Energy took place over three days in late June in non-stop three-to-six foot barrels. The speciality event looks to recognise the standout surfers of the swell at arguably the best wave in the world and the rules are simple – show up and pull in.

“The Skeleton Bay Shootout is a peer-judged event and it’s pretty underground. No-ones really knows when it will happen, it’ll just pop-up depending on the swell and whoever is there is there,” says Eli Beukes, who put in a solid showing on his first trip to the iconic left-hander on the edge of the Namib Desert. “It’s pretty cool because it’s mostly going by word of mouth and whoever has been the surfer of the swell or gets the best barrel will get a bit of a cash prize at the end.”

After three days of pumping waves, Jordy Maree from Cape Town, South Africa, was the unanimous winner of the Wave of the Swell after wrangling a seemingly endless drainer that doubled in size as it chewed and spat for close on a kilometre down the point.

Nadia Erostarbe from the Basque Country set the bar as the Standout Woman after packing a deep double-tube followed by a series of big hacks. Damien Lackey from Walvis Bay, Namibia, was the Local Standout, while Max Elkington from Cape Town, South Africa, was deemed the standout Surfer of the Swell.

“This was essentially a dry-run for the concept,” says event co-founder Will Bendix. “We’re planning a series of Shootouts based on the same idea at some of the most incredible waves around the world in 2024 and looking to bump up the prize money significantly. The prizes are a nice way to recognise who was charging but it’s really not about the money at the end of the day. There’s always so much excitement when waves like this are firing and anybody who gets a good wave out there is a winner. The Shootout is essentially a celebration of that.”

Craig Anderson

Craig Anderson

South African / Aussie raised Craig Anderson is arguably the most influential free surfer of the last couple of decades. Craig has never been one to hog the limelight, in fact, he was pretty uncomfortable being followed around New York by Sam and his camera, though that could have been thanks to the ‘morbid’ hangover he was nursing. In this episode, Craig chats through the process of leaving one of the biggest surf brands in the game to set up his own venture, FORMER and the mistakes he made along the way. It’s a super chilled insight into a super chilled bloke. One to sink a beer to for sure.

Shark & SUP

Shark & SUP

Recently, I’ve been filming large great white sharks. These are sub-adult and adult white sharks I’ve been filming this month.

It’s known that large adult white sharks tend to stay offshore in California while the juveniles hang out in near-shore waters. Lately, it’s been the large females near shore I’ve been observing. @TheMalibuArtist

Padang Padang Invitees

Padang Padang Invitees

Rip Curl has officially announced the 16 men and 8 women surfers invited to compete in the 20-Year Anniversary of the Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang.

The announcement was made on Sunday at the Opening Ceremony, held at Padang Padang Beach in front of a crowd of several hundred fans gathered from all over the world to join in blessing the event with good waves, a safe competition, and officially christen the start of the holding period (Aug. 1st-31st) to the one-of-a-kind tube-riding invitational.

Among the international invitees this year are defending champion Clay Marzo (HAW), WCT legend Taj Burrow (AUS), Kolohe Andino (USA) Mason Ho (HAW), and 15-year-old surfing prodigy Dylan Wilcoxen (USA). Indonesia will be represented by 2x Rip Curl Cup Champion Mega Semadhi, 2x champion Bol Adi Putra, and 2014 champion Garut Widiarta, among others.

Among the elite female tube-riders invited to the first-ever Women’s Rip Curl Cup at Padang Padang are Erin Brooks (CAN), who last year claimed third place in the men’s division, as well as Sierra Kerr (AUS) and Sky Brown (ENG, below).

Two-time Rip Curl Cup Champion and pride of Balinese surfing, Mega Semadhi, said he’s looking forward to a rematch with the big names, and surfing alongside Indonesia’s up-and-coming female chargers as they give it their all out at Padang Padang in the heaviest conditions of the year.

“Padang Padang is one of the most amazing waves in Indonesia and the Rip Curl Cup is for the best of the best out there,” Semadhi said. “If you want the opportunity to surf out there for the Rip Curl Cup, you have to be able to perform with the best. And I think these women are up to the challenge.”

All eyes are now focused on a powerful Indian Ocean swell that is forecast to reach Bali this week. Contest directors are monitoring the swell closely, with a potential contest run day of Friday, Aug. 4th looking increasingly likely. Stay tuned to ripcurl.com for the latest event status updates.

The 2023 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang will be webcast LIVE to the world at ripcurl.com and at worldsurfleague.com. Fans can also visit the Rip Curl website to check the official event swell forecast, real-time contest status, and video updates from Bali.
