Filmmakers Mike Bromley and Ryan Meichtry follow the Icelandic duo, photographer Elli Thor Magnusson and pro surfer Heidar Logi, into the deepest parts of Iceland’s frozen wave country, along with international pros Conor Maguire, Natxo Gonzalez, Russell Bierke, and Noah Wegrich. “I’ve always had a special connection with La Gravière,” Jeremy Flores says. “I’ve been surfing there since I was super young, but I used to feel like I had a love/hate relationship with the wave. I would have so much fun free surfing there, but would seem to struggle in contests.”
That suddenly changed last October.
Jeremy won the 2019 Quiksilver Pro France in a rowdy way, dropping the highest heat totals in nearly every round leading up to the final. He had found a rhythm, a zone. He was unstoppable.
“Ever since I won, I feel like I have more of a supernatural connection to the waves here.”

“I think the best thing about surfing in winter is being able to share an uncrowded lineup with your friends [like Marc Lacomare, who has a cameo in this clip]. Even though I’m an island guy, I had a day where I surfed for six hours in a five mil. Years ago, there’s no way I would have done that — but suits are just so good these days.”

If you follow us or any of the British and Irish big wave surfers on socials you may often see us comment that not many people appreciate the effort put in or the learning curve that the crews towing Mully have been on. Most are basically self taught, picking up tips as they met more teams from around the globe.
When Cotty first picked up a rope there had only really been Gabe Davies and Richie Fitzgerald giving it a go in the cold wild waters of north west Ireland. It is an unforgiving place. A fact that Cotty, obviously highly enthusiastic, optimistic, learner PWC driver soon learned.
When news leaked out of his tour around Donegal Bay trying to swim the ski back in so he didn’t let down his mate or take up the emergency services time, he took hammering from some haters on social forums. While there were some points he could take on board, some were way over the top. Cottys answer. Well five years later he towed McNamara into the biggest wave ever ridden.
