ROTTNEST ISLAND, Western Australia, Australia (Tuesday, May 25, 2021) – Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) and Gabriel Medina (BRA) have won the Rip Curl Rottnest Search presented by Corona, the fifth stop on the 2021 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the final event of the Australian leg. Strickland Bay turned on once again with four-to-six foot waves on offer for what was an epic final day of not only this event but also the four-event Australian leg.

Fitzgibbons Earns 12th CT Victory, Climbs to World No. 2 on Rankings
Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS) earned her 12th CT victory today after defeating Johanne Defay (FRA) in the Final. The win now puts Fitzgibbons up to World No. 2 on the rankings, behind Carissa Moore (HAW). En route to the Final, Fitzgibbons eliminated two-time WSL Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) in the Semifinals.
“It feels so good to be back in the winner’s circle,” Fitzgibbons said. “I set a goal to be in the Final 5 at the end of the year and I’ve been outside of it for a few events, so it’s amazing to be rewarded for the work. If you give yourself every opportunity, every now and then the planets align and you can come out with the win.”
Fitzgibbons is a 12-year CT veteran who has come in second in the World Title race three consecutive times from 2010 to 2012. Now in 2021, this victory is critical to the Australian’s World Title hopes as this season will host the new one-day format to decide the World Champions with the Rip Curl WSL Finals. Only the Final 5 surfers on the leaderboard will qualify for the Rip Curl WSL Finals, and now at World No. 2, Fitzgibbons is well in the race to take her maiden World Title at Lower Trestles in September.
“I grew up watching the Rip Curl Search events,” continued Fitzgibbons. “So many of them were in lefts, so it’s cool to have one back and it be in a left. I don’t get too many opportunities to use my strength, which is my backhand, and we may never compete back here on Rottnest, so this one really feels like a milestone. It just feels so good, I’m so stoked.”

Medina Bests Rookie Cibilic for Win at Rip Curl Rottnest Search
Two-time WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) continued his blistering form with his second win this season and the 16th CT win of his career. The Brazilian has made it to four out of five Finals this year and has all but guaranteed himself a spot in the Rip Curl WSL Finals, the new one-day competition to decide the World Champions at the end of the season.
“I’ve loved my time here in Australia and especially Rottnest,” said Medina. “It’s a new place for me to visit and it’s so beautiful. The waves have been great the whole time and we have been so welcomed. This is a very special place and it’s been such a fun event for me. I made it through a lot of tough heats and am glad to win surfing the way I want to surf. I’m so happy.”
Medina in action Photo: WCT/Dunbar
Medina saved one of his best performances for last in the Final against rookie Morgan Cibilic (AUS). The Brazilian’s commitment to rail and above the lip surfing, going both left and right, was a perfect match with the punchy walls on Rottnest. Medina’s 15.50 two-wave combination (out of a possible 20) was enough to see him clinch his second Rip Curl Search trophy, almost a decade after winning his first at the Rip Curl Search San Francisco.
“It feels amazing to win another Search trophy all these years after my first,” Medina continued. “This has been such a good start to the season for me and I’m just so happy to keep the momentum going. My wife’s birthday is coming up and she said she wanted the trophy because it’s so pretty, so I’m so happy to have it now.”
It was the fourth time this season Medina and Cibilic went head-to-head, with Medina taking victory in every match-up so far. While Cibilic is still searching for a win over one of the best surfers of this generation, he now adds a runner-up finish to his equal 3rd and 5th placings from earlier this year and moves into the Final 5 on the rankings, whilst continuing to lead the race to the 2021 CT rookie of the year.
“This feels unbelievable, to be honest,” Cibilic said. “Coming into these last couple of events, I’ve come into them with a lot of confidence and a Final hasn’t felt too out of reach, but I guess if you asked me last year if I’d get a Quarterfinal, a Semifinal, and a Final finish from the four Australian events, I would have told you that you were tripping. It feels amazing, so I’m super stoked. I was really nervous in my Semifinal against Liam, probably more so than the Final. He and I grew up competing against each other and have a pretty good rivalry and always want to beat each other. In the Final, I felt ready to go but the waves were slow and Gabby was ripping so not much I could do there. I’m still stoked though.”
Johanne Defay Jumps Into Final 5
Johanne Defay Photo: WCT/Dunbar
Fitzgibbons and Defay are renowned for their confidence and finesse in big, lefthand reef breaks, so it was no surprise to see them meet in the Final at Strickland Bay. In the Final, Fitzgibbons looked unstoppable, finding the best waves of the 40-minute heat and surfing them flawlessly to post a winning heat total of 15.10 (out of a possible 20).
“It would have been good to go one step further, but this is so good to make the Final,” Defay said. “I’m already really happy with my Australian leg, so it’s so good to finish like that. I’m going home now to rest up and get some rehabilitation for my knee and make sure I’m ready for the Surf Ranch and for the rest of the season.”
Although Defay fell short in the Final, she didn’t give up until the final minutes, posting a 7.23 and a 4.00 to almost recapture the lead in the dying minutes of the heat. This Final marked a breakthrough for Defay after three straight Quarterfinal finishes on the Australian leg. Defay now leaves Australia sitting in fifth on the rankings.
“It’s not an easy lineup, but it was so good to have a good left on Tour this season,” continued Defay. “Something that I have learned to appreciate whilst being on Tour is discovering new places, and coming to Rottnest was like that for everyone. It was also a level playing field, which is rare for us on Tour and made it such an interesting event. I’ve had a strong start to the year, so I’m feeling like if I keep the confidence and momentum I have now, I can have my best finish to the year and be inside the top five.”

World Champions Fall Short in Semifinals
Four-time WSL Champion Carissa Moore (HAW), two-time WSL Champion Tyler Wright (AUS), and 2019 WSL Champion Italo Ferreira (BRA) all fell in their respective Semifinal heats today.
Wright was unable to find a rhythm in the 35-minute heat, only scoring a 7.64 (out of a possible 20) against a rampaging Fitzgibbons. For Moore, it was a much closer affair with the Hawaiian going down to eventual runner-up Defay by less than one point. Similar to Wright, Ferreira struggled to find a rhythm in his Semifinal against countryman Medina and took a third-place finish, leaving the Aussie leg still sitting second on the rankings.
Wildcard Liam O’Brien’s Run Ends in Semifinals
After an epic run in his first-ever CT event appearance, Liam O’Brien (AUS) was eliminated by good friend and eventual runner-up Cibilic in the Semifinals. O’Brien put on an amazing show over the last week at Strickland Bay and displayed why he will be a permanent fixture on the CT in the near future, leaving Rottnest with an equal third-place finish.
Bourez Wins Best Barrel of the Event, Awarded Handcrafted Didgeridoo by Ash and Kelly Collard
In addition to the highly coveted Search trophies, the Rip Curl Rottnest Search awarded Michel Bourez (FRA) the Rip Curl Search Best Barrel Award. Bourez was awarded a Didgeridoo that was handmade by Ashley Collard and Kelly Collard. The story for the Didgeridoo is about the Rottnest Island bushland that is surrounded by the ocean and waves. The white dots are the stars of the Aboriginal dreaming and stories that are shared on the Island. Within blue ocean are our spiritual Guardians that are represented by the different color dots.
Ashley is a Balardong Nyungar man from Kondinin Western Australia and an artist of 30 years. He was named 2013 NAIDOC Perth Indigenous artist of the year, runner up in the 2013 National Deadly awards (Education category) and winner of the Visual Art Award for the City of Kwinana’s Inaugural Arts and Culture Awards in 2018.
Ashley and Kelly, an artist of 10 years, now produce artworks together, which include paintings on musical instruments, surfboards, kangaroo skins, and clothing. They also create murals for schools and businesses around Perth Western Australia and are musical performers and artists.

Thankfully we could still go surfing during the second lockdown in Scotland but without being able to travel as normal it meant surfing all types of conditions at home right through winter this year – Mark Boyd.

Australians Wilson, Cibilic, O’Brien Through to Quarterfinals at Rip Curl Rottnest Search pres.
The Rip Curl Rottnest Search presented by Corona, the fifth stop on the 2021 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the final event of the Australian leg, only completed the first three heats of the men’s Round of 16 before going on hold and calling the competition off for the remainder of the day due to lack of swell on offer at Strickland Bay. The three heats saw Australians Julian Wilson, Morgan Cibilic, and Liam O’Brien book their spots into the Quarterfinals.
Julian Wilson (above) Through to Quarters for First Time This Season
The opening heat of the day saw two of the CT’s most experienced campaigners and perennial title threats, Julian Wilson (AUS) and Jordy Smith (ZAF), go head-to-head at Strickland Bay. There was a lot on the line for both surfers with Wilson still searching for his first Finals appearance of the season, while Smith was hoping to back up his runner-up finish at Margaret River with another solid result at Rottnest. It was a battle of tactics between the two with Wilson coming out on top. Wilson found the better set waves and leaned on some of the progression he is so well known for to take the win.
“I feel like I’ve gotten over a big lump just there,” Wilson said. “To let Jordy go on that wave at the end then have a really nice one come to me felt so good. It was fun to look for those sections on the right and go for some big airs. I’ve been looking at the rights for that all week and have only had a couple of good ones and I’ll continue to look at them for the remainder of the event. I’m excited to throw some airs and make some big scores. I’m really happy with how well my strategy worked and just happy to win that heat.”
Aussie Youngsters Book Into Quarterfinals at Strickland Bay
Injury replacement Liam O’Brien (AUS, above) continues his charge in his career-first CT event, making his way through the Quarterfinals by eliminating CT sophomore Seth Moniz (HAW) in Heat 3 of the R/16. As conditions slowed, it was clear that the surfer who made the least mistakes would walk away with the win. In the end, it was O’Brien who had the upper hand, leaving Moniz with an equal 9th place finish.
“I wasn’t really expecting to make a heat at this competition, so I’m stoked to have made it this far,” O’Brien said. “That was a really tough heat and it sucks when there isn’t a heap of opportunity, but sometimes that happens in surfing. It ended up being pretty tactical. I made a couple of mistakes, Seth made a couple of mistakes, then I got lucky and ended up coming out on top. It’s been cool to be here working with my coach Jay Thompson, we’ve known each other forever through Burleigh and he’s helped me develop from a junior into what I am today, so it’s crazy to be on the beach at a CT with him and to be into the Quarterfinals.”

2021 CT rookie Morgan Cibilic (AUS) continued his epic first-year run, booking himself a spot in the Quarterfinals after a win over Leonardo Fioravanti (ITA) in Heat 2 of the Round of 16. Cibilic’s tight frontside hacks and explosive backside re-entries continue to wow in the waves at Stickland and today was no different as Cibilic won the heat.
With conditions rapidly slowing over the high tide and the swell continuing to drop, event organizers decided to call the event off for the day after Heat 3 of the men’s Round of 16. With a more promising forecast for tomorrow morning, another call will be made at 7:15 a.m. AWST to resume the remaining heats of the Round of 16.

ROTTNEST ISLAND, Western Australia, Australia (Thursday, May 20, 2021) – The Rip Curl Rottnest Search presented by Corona, the fifth stop on the 2021 World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) and the final event of the Australian leg, recommenced today in three-to-four foot surf at Strickland Bay. The women’s Quarterfinalists were determined after completing the Round of 16, and the men’s draw narrowed down the top 16 following the Round of 32.

Final 5 Update: No. 3 Gilmore and No. 4 Marks Fall in Round of 16
World No. 3 Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) is out of the Rip Curl Rottnest Search after falling to Nikki Van Dijk (AUS, above) in Heat 3 of the Round of 16. Gilmore could not overcome the 2.73-point gap to Van Dijk’s 7.83 and 6.00 scores (each out of a possible 10). Van Dijk goes into her Quarterfinal heat against two-time WSL Champion Tyler Wright (AUS) with momentum after taking out two names in the Final 5, Gilmore and World No. 2 Tatiana Weston-Webb(BRA).
“I’m so stoked to make it through that heat,” Van Dijk said. “I’ve had a really hard time making it out of that heat this year, so it feels good to be into the Quarterfinals finally. I had a loss in Round 1 and that kicked me into gear. Ending up in that elimination round is so sketchy. I feel like I’m surfing well at the moment, so it’s nice to see it paying off with some scores. I had a really fun heat surfing with Steph. We are really good friends, which makes it tough, but it was game on.”
In a disappointing finish to the Australian leg, World No. 4 Caroline Marks(USA) was eliminated in the Round of 16 and exited in equal 9th place. Marks fell to Malia Manuel (HAW), who scored a 14.44 (out of a possible 20) to Marks’ 12.16. Both competitors looked to focus on their backhands to find their scores and fortunately for Manuel, the lefts at Strickland Bay offered a lot more opportunity than the rights, leaving her with the upper hand in the 44-minute matchup.
Amuro Tsuzuki Photo: WSL/Miers
Amuro Tsuzuki Advances with Career-Best Result
Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) upset the competition with a major win over Courtney Conlogue (USA) in the final heat of the Round of 16. Tsuzuki’s win came in the dying minutes of the heat with an excellent 8.33, showcasing her incredible backhand surfing. Tsuzuki entered the event as the injury replacement and is the first Japanese woman to compete on the elite CT in over two decades. In only her third CT event, the 20-year old has achieved her career-best result and will face Johanne Defay (FRA) in Quarterfinal 4.
“I’m so happy right now,” Tsuzuki said. “That was a nervous heat for me, especially at the end. I definitely feel confident on my backhand and knew if I had the right wave, I could get a good score. I just didn’t know if it would come and that was the most nerve-wracking bit. I’m so happy to make it now.”
All eyes will be on the Tsuzuki v. Defay matchup in the Quarterfinals. Defay has shown impressive surfing throughout this entire Australian leg and again threw down big turns to defeat Keely Andrew (AUS) with a 15.57 two-wave total (out of a possible 20). Despite posting some of the biggest heat totals throughout this leg, Defay has yet to advance past the Quarterfinals and Defay will be eager for a breakthrough against Tsuzuki.
Filipe Toledo Photo: WSL/Dunbar
Replacement Liam O’Brien Defeats World No. 3 Filipe Toledo
Fresh off a win at the recent Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro, Filipe Toledo(BRA) arrived on Rottnest Island in his best form this season and at a wave that suits his surfing arguably better than any other stop this year. Toledo, pegged as a favorite, came up against injury replacement Liam O’Brien (AUS) in Heat 5 of the Round of 32 and the matchup didn’t disappoint. Toledo made a number of air attempts early while O’Brien stayed on the face, displaying why he has been a massive threat on the Qualifying Series in recent years and the tactic paid off with the wildcard taking down one of the event favorites in convincing fashion.
“Pretty happy, to say the least, after that win,” O’Brien said. “Obviously Filipe is a freak so I was stressing out at the end of that heat. He can turn pretty much any wave into a big score so I was lucky that nothing came at the end of the heat. I had a plan to get the best waves and to match him on the face. I don’t think I’d be beating him in the air so I stuck to the plan, which worked out in the end. The scoring at this level is a lot harsher than the QS, and it should be as everyone rips so hard, so when you hear a decent score get read out for your surfing, it feels really good.”
Gabriel Medina Photo: WSL/Dunbar
Medina and Ferreira Move Closer To Solidifying Spots at the Rip Curl WSL Finals
Reigning WSL Champion Italo Ferreira (BRA) along with two-time WSL Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) continue to close in on guaranteeing their spots at the Rip Curl WSL Finals, which will determine the 2021 World Champions at Lower Trestles in California later this year. The Brazilian duo snuck into the Round of 16, seeing Medina take down local wildcard Kael Walsh (AUS), and Ferreira dispatch Jacob Willcox (AUS) this afternoon.
“That was a long day,” said Ferreira. “I woke up too early today at 4:35 a.m. and I had a first session but then have been waiting for my heat. I was excited because there was a lot of opportunity out there, so you can create something and change the score and put the pressure. When we have waves, the overlapping heats are fun.
Jordy Smith Photo: WSL/Miers
CT Stalwarts Step up at Strickland
After a slow start to the Aussie leg of the CT, Jordy Smith (ZAF, above) finished in second place at the Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro to get his title campaign back on track. Smith is on track to back it up here at Rottnest Island with another heat win today, over injury replacement Stuart Kennedy (AUS). Smith posted a two-wave combination of 14.17, mixing his trademark rail game with some impressive progression to continue his momentum.
Michel Bourez (FRA) is currently ranked 30th in the world after four consecutive losses in the Round of 32. Today, Bourez finally moved past 17th place with a win over Frederico Morais (PRT) in Heat 7. Bourez continued to build on the momentum of his opening heat, where he scored a 9.63 with the best tube ride so far of the event, with sharp, powerful turns on both his frontside and backside. He will now face Miguel Pupo (BRA) in the Round of 16, Heat 4.
Sally Fitzgibbons Photo: WSL/Dunbar
Olympic qualifiers for Australia, Sally Fitzgibbons (above), Julian Wilson, and Owen Wright, won their heats today and will continue through to the next round of competition on Rottnest Island. Wilson and Wright have struggled to place higher than 9th this season but looked sharp in their heats against Wade Carmichael (AUS) and Matthew McGillivray (ZAF), respectively. Fitzgibbons will move into the Quarterfinals for the fourth time in 2021 after she knocked out Macy Callaghan (AUS) from the draw.
2015 WSL Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) also punched through to the Round of 16. De Souza earned an 11.26 combined score to override AustralianEthan Ewing’s 8.70 in Heat 14, R/32. The 16-year veteran is surfing in his last Australian event before retiring from the CT at the end of the 2021 season and will look to make the most when he comes up against Ferreira in the Round of 16.

COVID-19 Updates
The WSL continues to work closely with the West Australian Government and WA Police Department to monitor the COVID-19 situation both in WA, where competitors and staff are currently located, and in New South Wales, where they have traveled from. The Boost Mobile Margaret River Pro is prepared to operate in a ‘bubble’ should it be required. As a result of the COVID-19 contingency plans, there is no option to run the event at a mobile location outside of the main event site of Main Break and The Box, such as North Point in Gracetown.
The WSL will implement a robust and thorough COVID-19 health and safety plan for each event during the Australian leg of the CT in accordance with federal and state guidance. The WSL’s health and safety plan includes enhanced high-touch cleaning at the event site, contact tracing procedures, sanitizer stations throughout the event site, and minimal personnel on-site. All traveling athletes and support staff completed the mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine and received medical clearance from public health officials before entering the general community.
Due to COVID-19, the Australian CT events will run based on state border closures, strictly adhering to federal and state government guidelines and restrictions. All tour stops and dates subject to change due to applicable COVID-19 related restrictions, including global travel restrictions.
