Over five nights there was a heck of lot of action last week… We’ve covered the surfing already but Boardmasters is more than just a surf comp.
From the Beach Sessions at Fistral up to sold out nights at Watergate Boardmasters delivered possibly the best year yet. The stunning sunshine certainly helped things along. Arguably the best weekend of weather this summer.
Everyone will have their own highlight, be it a band, an experience or just hanging with your mates in the sun overlooking a beautiful beach. Here’s a few moments captured by the Boardmasters team of photog’s and our own Sharpy.

The Band
Through good luck, hard work, bags of talent and constant touring its all come together for the band. Boardmasters have announced that Tom Curren will be swapping his surfboard for a mic and guitar as he gets set to take to the stage at the Beach Sessions, Fistral Beach on Wednesday 10 August.
He will be playing the Wednesday night session along with Ady Suleiman who releases new summer banger ‘Running Away’ next month and South-West hip-hop DJ, DJ Format and Abdominal.
Thursday’s line-up sees indie rockers Betty The Shark, which includes pro-surfer/band-member and Toms daughter Lee-Ann Curren, as well as Pat Smith and one very special guest headline act to be confirmed soon – watch this space.

Boardmasters has today announced that applications are now being accepted for this summer’s Boardmasters Cornwall international surf competitions. This year, the world famous competitions will be included as part of the World Surf League Qualifying Series, featuring as a QS1000 event. Entries are now open for the WSL Qualifying Series (QS1000) and Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS1000). Applications must be submitted via the WSL Website where users must take out their WSL membership and enter.

In addition to the LQS we will also witness the best of visiting international, European and British short board talents at Fistral Beach. Boardmasters gets set to make waves today as the third headline act for this year’s festival is announced. Drum n Bass duo Chase & Status will be making a hotly anticipated return to the golden Cornish coastline for Boardmasters 2016 as they get set to entertain festivalgoers with their thumping, thrilling sound. Cornwall’s own surf and music festival runs from Wednesday 10 – Sunday 14 August 2016 for five days of exhilarating surf and music action along the sun-drenched coast. What are you waiting for? Chase & Status have firmly cemented themselves as the ultimate Drum n Bass duo, having dominated the dance scene for over a decade with their unique sound, which never fails to get crowds jumping. Having released three studio albums, their most iconic dance hits include ‘Blind Faith, ‘Lost and Found’ and ‘Count on Me’. The duo have just released a brand new single ‘Control’, featuring Slaves, who join the list of the huge musical names that Chase & Status have worked with, including Plan B, Example and Rihanna. They’re no strangers to Boardmasters, having headlined back in 2014. Back by popular demand, Chase & Status are sure rock Watergate Bay this summer with a fist pumping, banging display of the very best in Drum n Bass.
Boardmasters has also today announced further acts joining the line up, including 2016 BRIT Award winning rockers, the awesome Catfish and The Bottlemen who scooped with coveted British Breakthrough Act gong at this year’s ceremony. The four-piece, who released their new single ‘Soundcheck’ last month are currently on tour, taking the UK by storm with their retro-rock sound and are expected to drop a brand new album later this year.

The incredible Foxes will be bringing her electro-pop sound, with Krept & Konan representing the best in fresh UK hip-hop. UK rapper Mike Skinner presents TONGA, formerly front man of The Streets is lined up for Boardmasters 2016 alongside funk legends Soul II Soul best known for the chart-topper ‘Back To Life’, and dubstep pioneer Artwork. Bringing the best in UK grime is Kano, who has just released new album ‘Made in the Manor’. Get set for dance floor royalty, as Radio One Dance Anthems DJ Danny Howard also joins the line up, with Protoje who’s leading the reggae revival and Manchester punk rockers Spring King. Indie-rockers Eliza and The Bear, who have firmly established themselves with a reputation for an unforgettable live show will take to the stage, as will White who’s sure to bring an electro-funk vibe, the incredible Irish talent SOAK and one to watch, singer-songwriter Louis Berry. Sunset Sons have announced the release of their debut album Very Rarely Say Die for April 1 2016 on French Exit via Kobalt Label Services. The album will be preceded by new single ‘Somewhere Maybe’ in February. Very Rarely Say Die – recorded between London, Nashville and their adopted hometown of Hossegor with Jacquire King (Kings of Leon) and James Lewis (Arctic Monkeys) – will arrive amidst a 14 date UK and Ireland headline tour. The tour begins in Newcastle on March 23, hits London’s KOKO on April 6 (following previous sold-out London headlines at Scala, House of Vans and Community Festival) and will then take the band on a 17 date European leg – for full dates see below. The headline tour follows their support slot for Imagine Dragons across their current UK and European arena dates.
The Anglo-Aussie band have had a blinding past 12 months, which has seen them play over 20 summer festival dates (Glastonbury, T In The Park, Isle of Wight, Boardmasters), secure Radio 1 (Track of The Day) and Radio X (Daytime Playlist) support, and win over hundreds of new fans, night after night opening up for Imagine Dragons. Prior to that, the band embarked on a sold-out UK tour through the spring, which ended on a sold-out London Scala show – all none too shabby for a bunch of four surfers who fell into music as a means to pay the bills just two years previously.
Sunset Sons came into being when Rory, Pete, Jed and Rob encountered each other whilst pursuing their love of surfing in the sleepy French beach town of Hossegor. Drummer Jed came across frontman Rory hammering out cover versions (which incredibly took in everything from QoTSA to D12) on a bar piano, inbetween stints pot-washing in the kitchen. That bar, ‘Le Surfing’, happened to be owned by Australian bassist Pete’s cousin, and lent its name to Sunset Sons’ self-funded and released debut EP (which entered at No.6 on the iTunes Rock Chart, having been recorded in just three days).
A subsequent UK tour took the band not to the typical major city dates in London and Manchester, but out to the coastal surf towns of the UK including Thurso, Scarborough and St Ives. It’s part and parcel of that same down-to-earth love for surfing and its no-nonsense lifestyle which keeps all four members of Sunset Sons still living by the sea in Hossegor, still more than a little bemused by their own success; ‘That was part of the deal’ says Rory. ‘We couldn’t write the songs we do living in, say, London’. True to form, as soon as the festival season was over, the band returned to Hossegor to finish recording Very Rarely Say Die.
