Coming up in Carve issue 200 (epic cover preview on the socials, out next week) we've got the gals trip to Portugal. We had to dodge the rain and wind for the five days we were there but we got some fun waves and had a right laugh. These are the moving pictures to go with the story in the magazine. Short version Tegan and Bonnie are groms and they got to train and hang with our QS ladies Peony and Lucy along with coach extraordinaire Joel Gray.
When Carve started in 1994 you had to wait until the late spring, and paid good money, to get your hands on a VHS video of Hawaii 9-4, or similar, to see what went down during the Hawaiian season. These days half* the surfers on the North Shore have their own vlog series bringing near daily doses. Jamie o’Brien is the official king of the current crop and here’s his latest featuring some Pipe perfection.
When they found Ben Gravy on the North Shore he was surfing a place most people like to stay away from. Mason tried to think of a polite way to tell him he didn't want to surf that spot but Ben talked him into it. One of the most fun days ever.
Pain, let’s be honest it’s not something any of us are keen on.That is unless it’s happening to someone else, after seeing most of our most popular posts involve people getting seriously nailed. So here’s all the best wipeouts and serious slams from J.O.B and crew, pop the kettle on, grab a biscuit and get ready to watch his crew get pounded into reefs, the beach, concrete and anything else that gets in the way, ouchy times 10. Hit Play.
The first part of the season Hawaii can be a bit hit and miss with a lot of the good gravy coming later season in the last few years. Not the case this year where the waves have been on tap. Jordy Smith, Eli Olson, Brett Barley, Soli Bailey, Ian Crane, Jake Kelley, Timmy Reyes and Dwight Pastrana haven’t missed an opportunity to get under the hood of Oahu’s finest breaks.
Looks like plenty of juice coming down the track with the Pipe comp likely to start and Jaws possible for Thursday.
New EP from everyone’s favourite former plumber, now Professional Big Wave Surfer, Andrew Cotton.
This week the waves are smaller than usual, but it never goes flat at Nazare. Cotty manages to get two good shortboard sessions in one day and it’s time to start getting knees and shoulders ready for paddling the big ones!
He also talks you through a rehab session focused on knee strength and stability.
