Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang

The 2024 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang concluded with a thrilling final day as surfers from around the world competed in the challenging barrel conditions of the iconic Balinese break. Noa Deane emerged victorious in the men’s division, claiming the title in front of a packed crowd of surf enthusiasts and locals. Moana Jones Wong dominated the women’s division, showcasing her exceptional talent and fearless approach to secure the top spot with a commanding performance.

The event brought together surfers from Australia, Indonesia, Hawaii, and beyond. With powerful waves and thick barrels, the competitors delivered a spectacular display of skill and precision. Noa Deane stood out with his powerful and stylish surfing, scoring 13.50 in the final heat to secure his win. Moana Jones Wong’s performance was equally impressive, reinforcing her reputation as one of the top female barrel riders in the world.

Despite unpredictable conditions early in the day, competitors rose to the challenge, delivering an incredible display of skill and determination. Moana Jones Wong excelled in the challenging waves, finding the cleanest barrels and maximising every opportunity for her well-deserved victory.

Local favourite Jasmine Studer was another standout, impressing the crowd with her deep understanding of Padang Padang’s waves and securing some of the day’s best rides. Kailani Johnson also made her mark, tackling some of the heaviest waves with fearless dedication, showcasing her courage and commitment to the sport.

“This win is unreal,” said Moana Jones Wong. “The conditions were challenging, but that’s what makes it so satisfying. You never really know what the ocean’s going to throw at you, and that’s the beauty of it. Surfing with such amazing women and coming out on top—there’s nothing better. Padang Padang is just magical.”

Event Director Harrison Mann commented on the day’s conditions: “After flawless conditions during the Trials & Round 1, today was not the conditions we were hoping for on finals day. However, it highlighted the barrel-riding skill of our two champions, making them deserving winners.”

As the day progressed and conditions improved, surfers adapted to the changing waves. Mason Ho, known for his fearless and innovative style, took on the barrels with his usual flair, delivering a thrilling spectacle. Joel Parkinson, a former world champion, demonstrated his expertise with smooth, controlled surfing throughout the competition.

Local hero Bol Adi Putra, with his deep knowledge of Padang Padang, navigated the waves with impressive skill. His performance underscored why he is considered one of Bali’s top surfers, making the most of the conditions and resonating with the local crowd.

Reflecting on his victory, Noa Deane shared, “I never thought I would win. My intention was pure fun and surfing with my hero Mason Ho. It turns out I was the winner, and this is the best feeling ever.” Deane’s words capture the spirit of the Rip Curl Cup, where the joy of surfing and camaraderie often outweigh the competitive drive.

The day concluded with a celebratory awards ceremony, where surfers, officials, and fans gathered to honour the champions and celebrate the event’s success. Noa Deane and Moana Jones Wong’s victories added their names to a prestigious list of past champions, solidifying their places in surfing history.

The idea for this board came when Dane was riding his original Dumpster Diver while filming “Out of the Rafters” edit for Chapter 11 last year. He was was tripping out how how tiny and short the Dumpster Diver felt and wanted to build a longer – modernised version that still tapped into the magic of the original.

One Shot 4.0 Chapter 1: Glacier Surfing.

Blue Banana is celebrating World Photography Day for the fourth consecutive year with the launch of “One Shot,” a project where the iconic adventure and fashion brand turns inspiring dreams into reality through breathtaking imagery.

For the 2024 edition, the brand received nearly 500 submissions from fans, realising that many shared similar dreams. This led them to name this year’s project the “Parallel Dreams Edition,” bringing together individuals who didn’t know each other but had the same vision.

Among them are Portuguese surfer Eurico Romaguera and Spanish photographer Jorge Abian, who both dreamed of capturing a wave in Greenland—not just any wave, but one created by the calving of an iceberg into the sea, a phenomenon that occurs during the summer melt. They embarked on a journey to Ilulissat to fulfill this dream. Their adventure, titled Greenland Dream, was documented by Spanish filmmakers Nico Pina and Ibai Mielgo.

“This feat has been accomplished in Alaska before, but never in Greenland. It was a completely new challenge for all of us. We didn’t know if we would be able to achieve it within a limited time and with no idea where to find the wave,” says Romaguera. “We connected with local fishermen, and even they found it extraordinary. They guided us to potential spots where calving events could create the waves we were seeking, places where ice or land formations could shape the waves caused by the glacier’s collapse,” Abian adds.

“We didn’t just explore the area by boat… we’ve kept a special surprise for those who watch the video,” Pina concludes.

March for Clean Water, Sat 26th of October 2024, Parliament Square London.

Add your name to the march here!

A coalition of the concerned including Surfers Against Sewage, River Action, Greenpeace, RSPB, Clean Water Sports Alliance and the WI and more are calling on everyone in the country angry at the state of water to join them on a march to demand that the government takes urgent action to address the UK’s alarming and dangerous water pollution crisis in Central London on Saturday 26th October!

They invite the public to join in one simple demand of Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer: ‘to take immediate and decisive action to end the poisoning of our rivers, lakes and seas by the lethal cocktail of raw sewage, agricultural waste and other chemical pollutants, that over recent years have been allowed to leave most of our waterways so filthy that they present major risks to human health and untold damage to nature.

This must include:

a plan to address the continuous illegal dumping of raw sewage by the water companies;

a full set of solutions to end all other major sources of water pollution;
the reform of our failed regulatory system, including Ofwat and the Environment Agency, so the law can be effectively enforced against polluters

“We urge everyone who cares about clean water to unite and march through central London to Parliament Square on Saturday 26th October. The march is inclusive, accessible, step free and everyone is welcome to join. Marchers are encouraged to wear blue to symbolise clean water; to let their creativity run free and bring noise, placards, puppets, posters, banners, costumes, marching bands and musical instruments.

It’s going to be the biggest sewage protest in London since SAS went to the House of Commons in the 90’s.

The March for Clean Water is coordinated by River Action and Feargal Sharkey in close collaboration with Surfers Against Sewage and major charities and governing bodies including the Clean Water Sports Alliance, British Rowing, British Canoeing, Greenpeace, RSPB, The Women’s Institute, The Wildlife Trusts, Angling Trust, SOS Whitstable, Wildlife and Countryside Link, The Rivers Trust, Ilkley Clean River Group, Soil Association, Windrush Against Sewage Pollution and many local community groups from across the country.

River Campaigner Feargal Sharkey says:

“We call on the Government to end the environmental devastation being inflicted upon our rivers, lakes and seas. It stops here, it stops today, it stops now. End pollution, end polluting for profit. Government must order an urgent root and branch review of the failed oversight and regulation of the water industry. It is now time to hold to account those industries that for too long now have been allowed to knowingly and wantonly pollute our waters driven by nothing more than profit and greed. We call on everyone in the country who is concerned or angry at the state of our waters to join us and march.”

The Chair and Founder of River Action, Charles Watson:

“The initial noises coming out of our new government regarding cleaning up our filthy waterways, whilst encouraging, do not nearly go far enough to deal with the scale of the problem they have inherited. Nothing short of wholescale reform of our failed regulatory system and comprehensive strategies to address all major sources of pollution, including sewage discharges and agricultural run-off, will suffice. On the 26th of October the public will make this point very clear to Sir Keir Starmer in no uncertain terms.”

The March for Clean Water is on Saturday 26th October. It will be a legal, peaceful, family-friendly and inclusive demonstration to send a simple message to the newly elected Labour Government: it is your job to end the poisoning of our rivers, lakes and seas. The march is planned to assemble at a central London location and will end at Parliament Square. We will assemble from 1200 then begin to march from approximately 1245, with a rally with speakers in Parliament Square from approximately 1400. Note all timings are provisional and will be confirmed in the run up to the event.

River Action is an environmental charity on a mission to rescue Britain’s rivers from the deluge of pollution that has left the majority of our waterways in a severely degraded ecological condition. Our campaigns to date have focussed on tackling the severe environmental crises created by both sewage and agricultural pollution.
