Rip Curl and Tya Zebrowski

Tya Zebrowski has just extended her contract with Rip Curl until 2028. The young French surfer, who will celebrate her 14th birthday on March 9, is one of the brightest prospects in both European and global surfing.

“I’m so excited for this new adventure with you, all the way to the Los Angeles Olympics and beyond. Thankyou for giving me wings to fly, for fueling the fire inside me. The best is yet to come… More search, more fun,and the dream tour (aka the CT) ahead!” said Tya Zebrowski after signing her contract extension.

Since its inception, Rip Curl has been dedicated to supporting young surfers. The brand launched theGromSearch in 1999—a global event showcasing young surfing talent across seven regions worldwide. Thecompetition culminates in an international final, bringing together the champions from each region. A truelaunching pad for future global stars of the sport, it has seen surfers like Gabriel Medina, Italo Ferreira,Stephanie Gilmore, and Tyler Wright, all finalists in this prestigious competition. Tya Zebrowski won theEuropean GromSearch final in 2024.

This talented surfer, with roots in both Landes and Tahiti, also benefits from Rip Curl’s international support, including access to world-class facilities and coaching. “Since I was 9 years old, you’ve been by my side. The trust you’ve given me is so much more than just a sponsorship—it’s a true surfing family. A solid support system that pushes me to give my very best. A team manager who’s always there, always caring, guiding me through every wave” , she added.

“We are proud and thrilled to extend our partnership with Tya. Even though she is still very young, her progress in the past few months has been remarkable. She aims for very big goals, and it’s crucial that she feels supported and can fully focus on her athletic career,” said Yann Martin, Team Manager Europe at Rip Curl.

In 2024, the young surfer claimed victory in three Qualifying Series events – the circuit that allows surfers to earn points to qualify for the CT – in just two months: Newquay in England, Pantin in Spain, and Anglet in France. Her win in Anglet came right after her triumph in the Rip Curl GromSearch U16 category and the Surf de Nuit event.

Following that, during her very first Challenger Series event (the gateway to the World Tour) in Ericeira, Portugal, in October 2024, she secured an impressive second place, losing only to Australian Sally Fitzgibbons.

With this contract extension, Rip Curl reaffirms its commitment to supporting the most promising young talents in surfing. Tya Zebrowski embodies the future of the sport, and Rip Curl is proud to stand by her side on this incredible journey.

La Vaca Gigante

La Vaca Gigante

La Vaca Gigante is a big wave surfing event organised by ObsessionA2 Club that takes place at ‘Cueto’ cliffs, near the city of Santander, in Northern Spain.

Along with Punta Galea Challenge and Illa Pancha Challenge, La Vaca Gigante is the one of the few extreme surf events in Spain, internationally appreciated as one of the very few big wave competitions in Europe.

The event is invitational. What makes La Vaca so special is the unique characteristics of the wave: on a given day, when conditions are right, 20 to 24 feet waves may occur. A long waiting period –October to May- is set to ensure plenty of opportunity for optimum conditions to happen, and the event can go on after a one-week alert, when surf and wind forecast is favourable.

Rileys Rundown…

Riley’s is one of the craziest waves in the world, breaks over super shallow slab of rock and a lot of days it’s not surfable. Whether is be the tide , wind or swell directions it takes a lot for these big clean days to happen so to score one like this is super epic .

Teen Robyn Larg Surfs Nazare

Teen Robyn Larg Surfs Nazare

Words: Beth Franklin Photos: Tim Bonython SwellChasers

Robyn Larg, from Tiree, made history when she surfed a near-15ft wave on February 15 at the world’s biggest wave in Portugal, as the youngest British person to surf Nazare.

The 18-year-old hit the waves with her big brother, Ben Larg, who also made history as the first Scottish person to compete at the World Surf League Nazare Tow Challenge. Ben cemented his histortical appearance at the event by taking third place in the men’s category. Ben, and his teammate, big wave pioneer Andrew Cotton, also took third place in the team’s category of the comp.

After surfing since the age of three, and seeing her brother tackle the waves Robyn decided she wanted to take them on too and she did just that. It comes after Laura Crane, from Devon, became the first British woman to surf Nazare last year. Despite, almost had to miss the swell as she was working at Scotland’s recently opened wave pool the Lost Shore Resort, she managed to catch a flight after the comp and the rest is history.

Here’s what Robyn had to say about her historic surf, and what’s next for the Scottish charger…

Robyn, when did you start surfing and how did you get into it?
I started surfing when I was around three years old, we live on the Isle of Tiree; my mum and dad run a surf school there, so we were always at the beach. My brother and dad would always be surfing so I just followed.
What surfers do you look up to? Any specific pro women that inspire you?
I really look up to my brother, he’s always helped me with my surfing since we were young, i also really look up to Laura Crane, I think she is such a good ambassador for women’s surfing especially for big waves.
What’s your advice to younger surfers looking to challenge themselves?
Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice. If an opportunity comes your way, don’t hesitate to take it if you can.

Your favourite surf spot?
I have loads of surf spots that I love to surf. Nazare was amazing, France and Cornwall are so much fun, but I love surfing at home in Tiree. I think when you know a place so well you just feel so comfortable there.
How did you mentally prepare for Nazare?
Were you scared? How did you manage that?
I wasn’t too scared before I got out as I knew there was no pressure to surf, once i was in the water I definitely started to feel a little more nervous, but ben was super reassuring and made me feel super safe which was nice- I loved being able to do it with him.
To have Andrew Cotton there as an added rescue was so reassuring. To be honest I get butterflies before I go out on a lot of surfs but once you catch a few waves the feeling settles, and you just get into it.
What’s your next surf goal?
My next surf goal is to just keep training with my brother and hopefully build up to some slightly bigger days both in Nazare and elsewhere.
Also, I have the Scottish National Championships in April and I’d like to do really well in that . I’ve loved representing Scotland and hope I can continue to do it.
