• Carissa Moore and Filipe Toledo to Wear Yellow Leader Jersey at Stop No. 9
• Adin Masencamp and Sarah Baum Announced as Event Wildcards
• Race to WSL Final 5 and Olympic Qualification Narrows
• More Available at WorldSurfLeague.com

In one week, the world’s best surfers will return to the famed right-hand point break of Jeffreys Bay for the Corona Open J-Bay, Stop No. 9 on the World Surf League (WSL) 2023 Championship Tour (CT). As the second-to-last stop of the regular CT season, before the Rip Curl WSL Finals, this competition will be pivotal in the World Title race. The Corona Open J-Bay holds a competition window from Thursday, July 13, through Saturday, July 22, 2023.

World Champions Carissa Moore (HAW, above) and Tyler Wright (AUS) have clinched their spots in the WSL Final 5, leaving only three women’s spots open. All of the men’s WSL Final 5 spots remain unclaimed but that could quickly change in J-Bay. The race to qualify for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 is also tightening. There are 10 men’s and four women’s places still on the line, and the points from J-Bay will be critical in deciding who will represent their country in Tahiti next year.

Carissa Moore and Filipe Toledo to Wear Yellow Leader Jersey at Stop No. 9

Five-time World Champion and current World No. 1, Carissa Moore (HAW), comes to J-Bay with some pressure off her back as she recently clinched a spot in the WSL Final 5. She is now hoping to claim the top spot heading into the Rip Curl WSL Finals. Moore knows what it takes to find success at J-Bay as she won this event in 2019 and finished in third-place last year.

Reigning World Champion Filipe Toledo (BRA, above) has reclaimed the yellow Leader jersey after former No. 1 Griffin Colapinto (USA) suffered an early exit from competition in Brazil. Toledo had back-to-back wins at J-Bay in 2017 and 2018. His perfect-10 for a double alley-oop during the contest in 2017 was a benchmark moment for performance on Tour.

Defending event winners Tatiana Weston-Webb (BRA) and Ethan Ewing (AUS) will be hoping for another win here in South Africa in order to secure their spots in the WSL Final 5. Weston-Webb currently sits just below the Top 5 at No. 6 on the rankings. After his runner-up finish in Brazil, Ewing has moved up to No. 3. If Ewing makes it to the WSL Finals he could become the first Australian man to win a World Title since Mick Fanning in 2013.

About the Venue: One of the World’s Best Right-Hand Pointbreaks

Jeffreys Bay, known as J-Bay, is revered as one of the world’s best right-hand pointbreaks. The iconic, endless wave offers barrels, air sections, and room for large maneuvers. The Eastern Cape is known for its world-class waves and breathtaking landscapes, food and dining, and wildlife experiences. A number of surfing greats have dominated this event over the years including Mick Fanning (AUS), Kelly Slater (USA), Andy Irons (HAW), Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), and Lisa Andersen (AUS).

11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) was absent from Brazil due to an ongoing illness but will return to competition at J-Bay. He is looking for his first event win of the season and it could be here as he has won this event four times. Reigning 8-time World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) had an early exit in Brazil and slid to No. 6 on the rankings. She needs a solid result here to regain herself in World Title contention.

Adin Masencamp and Sarah Baum Announced as Event Wildcards

South Africa’s Adin Masencamp and Sarah Baum have been confirmed as the men’s and women’s event wildcards as WSL Africa’s highest-ranked surfers on the Challenger Series rankings. Masencamp is currently ranked No. 17 and Baum is No. 8. This will be the first CT appearance for both of them and they will be cheered on by their home crowd.

Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang

Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang

As the surfing world prepares to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang, contest organizers this week made a very exciting announcement:

For the first time in history, a women’s event will be held in conjunction with the men’s on the best day of waves all season at Padang Padang. The 2023 Rip Curl Cup Women’s Invitational at Padang Padang will feature an elite field of the world’s top female tube riders competing alongside Indonesia’s best and a prize purse equal to the men’s.

The women’s and men’s events will be held concurrently on the same day, when Padang Padang is at its best. Men’s and women’s competition rounds will be staggered, with the women’s championship final scheduled to run immediately before the men’s final on the afternoon low tide, ensuring both groups of athletes have the opportunity to perform in ideal barreling conditions.

Among the top female tube specialists confirmed to compete in the inaugural women’s contest at Padang is 15-year-old surfing phenom Erin Brooks (CAN), who reached the championship final and claimed fourth place competing against the men last year. The Texas-born surfing savant, who grew up in Maui, Hawaii, applauded the decision to run the women’s and men’s competitions concurrently on the same day, when Padang Padang is at its best.

“I was so excited to hear that Rip Curl was launching the first-ever women’s contest at Padang Padang,” Brooks said. “It’s an amazing opportunity for the best female barrel riders to showcase our skills on an incredible wave in one of my favourite places in the world!”

Surf fans around the world are now counting down the days as Rip Curl prepares to bring all the drama and unsurpassed action of the “Ultimate Tuberiding Contest” to a massive global audience for another year of history in the making.

The holding period for the 2023 Rip Curl Cup runs from 1st – 31st of August, a full month during the peak of Indonesia’s prime swell season, providing the event with the best odds of scoring the mythical spitting barrels the Balinese Pipeline is world-famous for.

Among the world’s best barrel riders confirmed to push the limits of tube riding in pursuit of the prestigious men’s title are defending champion Clay Marzo (HAW), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Mason Ho (HAW). The full list of invited surfers, for both the women’s and men’s events, will be revealed at the official opening ceremony, to be held at Padang Beach on Sunday, July 30th.

ith past men’s champions such as Jack Robinson (AUS), Jamie O’Brien (HAW) and Chris Ward (USA) having etched their names on the historic Rip Curl Cup trophy, expect to see a roll call of the best tube riders on Earth gather at Padang in 2023 to challenge for one of the most prestigious titles in competitive surfing.

Meanwhile, the Rip Curl Cup Local Trials holding period is already underway. As of this writing, the trials may be called ON any day between July 1st-31st when a swell of proper magnitude forms in the southern Indian Ocean and Padang Padang roars to life.

As the Top 4 placing local surfers in last year’s main event, Mega Semadhi, Mega Artana, Garut Widiarta and Mustofa Jeksen all earned automatic entries to the 2023 Rip Curl Cup main event. The four remaining Indonesian surfer spots will be determined by the Local Trials.

Former men’s finalist, and current trials surfer, Betet Merta is hoping a big Padang swell shows up soon so he can punch his ticket back into the main event.

“It’s been a strange surf season so far in Bali,” Merta said. “It’s already July and we still haven’t had any really big swells. This week the conditions have been like rainy season in Bali with onshore winds in Uluwatu. But we all know that can change very quick. We’re all praying for that first big Padang swell to come this July – and if we can get it for the Local Trials I’ll already be stoked to surf barreling Padang with just three other surfers out – making it into the main event would be a bonus.”

Trouble: The Lisa Andersen Story Now Playing.

Trouble: The Lisa Andersen Story Now Playing.

Lisa Andersen is one of surfing’s few transcendent stars. 4x world champ and inductee into the Surfer Hall of Fame, she is a true surf icon. But this is not a story about surfing. It’s the story of a woman brave enough to be vulnerable.

Andersen discovered surfing when she was 13, though it was not what her parents wanted. They felt the beach was dangerous. Lisa did nothing to ease their concerns and eventually wound up in juvenile hall. Her father smashed her surfboard, so Lisa hatched an escape plan. She decided to go to Huntington Beach, leaving a note behind that read, “Going to California to become world surfing champion.” She was homeless before being taken in by an abusive local. Unlucky in relationships, she was abused often, and had to runaway time and again. Especially when she felt trapped. In the water, she was something else, and surfed like a gorgeous disaster. But she could never quite put it all together, until career suicide presented itself. An unexpected pregnancy. Over objections, she decided to have the child and in so doing broke through and became a champ. Trouble follows Lisa on her human journey. Surf is a beautiful backdrop but the real story is the epic poem of her life. It is the story of a self-made, American woman. It is a story of today.
