The Welsh Surfing Federation have announced that current Welsh Open and Junior Surfing Champion Rhys Barfield will be taking a place amongst the 24 man world class field to compete at the premier Red Bull Unleashed Surf event. The WSF and Red Bull have been working closely behind the scenes to look for an opportunity to include a Welshman on home turf (Rhys had other contest commitments lined up). It is a wonderful opportunity for Rhys and will provide local surf fans with additional interest beyond what’s set to be an incredible surfing spectacle.

Red Bull Unleashed Sports Director Jarrad Howse said
“ Red Bull is committed to the ongoing development of British and indeed Welsh surfing, naturally we’ve been working closely with the WSF in the background and it was always our intention to include at least one Welsh surfer. We’re delighted an opportunity has arisen and who better to include than the current Welsh Open and Junior champ!”

As for young Rhys, he’s naturally pretty pleased with the outcome. “ I’m so stoked to get this opportunity. I was supposed to be competing at a pro junior in Lanzarote but this was too good an opportunity to miss. I just can’t wait for my first heat now. A massive thank you to Red Bull and the WSF.”
