“Infamy infamy they’ve all got it in for me.”
Surfing has made tabloid headlines two days in a row in the Greatest of Britain as newspaper the Daily Mail has just ‘exposed’ Hollister’s story as completely made up! Who’d have thought? Oh, yeah, all of us…
The bullet pointed headlines include:
- Hollister Co’s storied history of its ‘free spirited surfer founder John M. Hollister’ was completely MADE UP to make the lifestyle brand more appealing – Shock
- Casual clothing label Hollister Co. was launched in 2000 by Abercrombie & Fitch, with the first store opened in Ohio. But the label is branded as starting in California in 1922 – Horror
- A&F created a backstory about a man named John Hollister, who they said founded the label after settling in Laguna Beach in 1919. The label’s ‘history’ said Hollister’s son then took over the business
- A&F created the ‘legacy’ to make the brand more credential, according to a new expose in The New Yorker. The fabricated story has created problems for locals in the California town of Hollister who have wanted to trademark the name themselves – I don’t believe it…
So as the song goes: ‘You’re a fake baby, no rhyme or reason…’ Well apart from gazillions in cash obviously…
And that my friends is a surf story with quotes from Kenneth Williams, Victor Meldrew and Alexander O’Neal contained within. They’d said it could never be done. I thank you…
