Those Canadians eh? Not content with infiltrating Hollywood with folk that everyone thinks are American, making a lot of good music, not to mention being skilled at bacon, they’ve got to go one better when it comes to surf trip transport. In this case a single prop plane. One way to definitely avoid the crowds and find your own spots. If you live in Canada of course. And own a plane. Not much use in the UK. You might get shouted at if your landed at Fistral. Be well handy in Norway though…

I finally got around to revisiting a hard drive containing footage from a surf trip to Punta Conejo Resort last spring. While we were scoring a small, playful swell, Brad Domke and Tom Curren were quietly staying at the resort and joining forces to explore uncrowded surf. During one afternoon session the two showed up while I was shooting video of our crew. It was my impression that Tom was learning to ride a number of finless wave tools from the skimboarding master and seemed to progress quickly this day. He started out catching waves with a Boogie Board on top of a blue soft top board. Clearly the additional floatation allowed him to easily catch waves before bailing the soft top after takeoff and standing up on the Boogie. Then he progressed to catching waves on just the Boogie and finally moving on to the skimboard. Regardless of the progression or the board, Curren remains the ultimate style master and one of my favorite surfers of all time. While their collaboration is not news, I do believe this was one of the first trips that Brad and Tom got together for finless sessions. Feeling lucky to capture this rare moment—being in the right place at the right time I guess… Ian Boyd.
In other news you’ll have heard Bethany Hamilton had a pop at Pe’ahi yesterday and so did Brad Domke, so he’s surfed a good chunk of the world’s behemoth spots on his finless craft now the nutter.
The Superbank is a man-assisted freak of salty goodness. It’s also, possibly, the most dysfunctional line-up in the known universe. But with such tubular treats on offer it’s no surprise the whole surf population of Coolie wants a shot at a mind-snapping, year-defining barrel. Come let the Mad Hueys show what could be… Just don’t be to jealous of the jetski step off. That’s kind of cheating after all.
