Icy east coast kegs with Brett Barley

January was a banger for swell along Cape Hatteras, NC. We kicked off the New Year with a fun afternoon of lined up chest high tubes in the snow, then Winter Storm Grayson arrived providing some incredible (yet challenging) surf.

After that… things just kept rolling, days of surprising conditions providing pumping waves with no one around, and days enjoyed with a crew of good friends pumping through endless barrels. Day after day it kept going, and at the end of January we saw our last hoorah for the month.

But at the end of it I realised there was too much footage to cram into one-minute Instagram edits, or short YouTube video. So here’s 10 minutes of lefthand tubes spent at my homebreak. If you don’t enjoy watching barrel after barrel, then don’t hit play … but if you care to sit down to a feast of below sea-level grinders from both my perspective, and that of Jeffrey O’Neil (filming), ENJOY!

The islands of the North Atlantic ocean are relatively unknown. We’d heard stories of a European Hawaii; an island in a totally different vector to most of the mainland. This intrigued us, and a blur of oversize baggage, passport control and an angry rental car man named Paulo ensued. We drove away from the busy part of this certain volcanic rock, and soon found ourselves above the clouds, only to wind down a mountain road and be below once more. Guided by Google maps and fairy tales, we embraced this quest, and persevered, in search of corduroy blue joy.

Talon’s Talents…

If you asked me : What are the two things you’re most passionate about? I’d say that, outside of my family, it’s the ocean and cinematography. Hands down.

In the back of my mind I always knew I’d shoot a trip with Kelly Slater. I just didn’t think it’d be his first ever surf trip with John Florence in a remote tropical line up and at times, there’d only be the three of us in the water, working. Because, that’s what it is right? Work…. yep, that’s what I tell people!

It’s been a while between drinks…. actually, 2014 since the last water cinematography reel emerged from the One Palm Media studio. Three years or so, many trips with amazing people, interesting experiences and lots of amazing pixels captured that can’t all fit into one space. So we’ve been brutal and tried not to bore you with this ‘showreel’ edit. Here it is (below the frame grabs)…. a culmination of the two things I’m most passionate about, outside of the thing that I am most passionate about. And that’s what it’s all really about isn’t it? Enjoy!
