Surfers for Roofs have been charging ahead to help the families in the surf town of Canoa. They have campsite and the ground will be ready for infrastructure 9 May. Over 75 surfers will join forces to set it all up.
So far they have got 167 tents, 10 boxes of baby formula, 4 water filters. 4 generators, 2 water pumps, 500 blankets, 1000 square meter of thick plástic for the cover of our comunal área, 1 50 kw transformer, 1000 diapers. All this means you have directly affected peoples lives for the better!
They now need cash to buy matresses and linen and help with the building costs – equipment hire etc. You can help by donating a little cash or buy a product for them here.
You can give as much or as little as you like, it all helps and all goes towards helping the families!
SFR have fully teamed up with Madre Tierra, who will build the showers, the bathrooms, the communal kitchen and the communal dining área.

Tents on their way to Ecuador!
The Ecuadorian surf town of Canoa has been devastated.
A bunch of surfers from all over the world are providing valuable aid in the earth quake hit surf town of Canoa, they need your help.
*Please share. Any media reading feel free to take the text
Parts of Ecuador are devasted right now. It’s small country with a lot of simple infrastructure, dirt streets in many villages. You probably won’t have heard much about it after the initial quake as the mainstream media have much sexier stories to pursue, and Ecuador is a long way from Europe or North America, but it is the worst disaster the country has had in 60 years. The coastal Manabi Province has been the worst his, where about 200 people died.
In the midst of the chaos a bunch of surfers have got together to try and do their bit for the popular coastal town of Canoa. A lot of travellers to South America will know it. As global NGO’s and charities send in assessors the surfers have already raised thousands in aid, are buying tents, have acquired some land for the rehousing of victims.
Part of the group is Eddie Salazar, a former Ecuadorian surfing champion, who surf guides in the Ecuador and the Galapagos for a living. Right now he is asking for donations to buy 200 tents. They have the land and equipment all sorted already. You can make a difference by pledging or sending a small bit of coin to the address below. If everyone on here donated a pound/euro /dollar we would surpass the target ten fold. They have raised over half the amount needed in a two days.
In essence you will be directly responsible for putting a roof over someones head.
For a direct cash donation get in contact with Eddie at [email protected] or directly to the Surfers for a Roof administration office at [email protected] (Gustavo plaza)
The immediate goal is to get family-sized tents and a handful of aid packages sent out within the next week. The group have got an Amazon wishlist going through which you can donate items directly, or send monetary assistance of any amount in the form of an Amazon gift card that will go directly to purchasing the items on the list.

And that, ladies and gents, is the Aussie leg: done. It’s been a real interesting start to the year, as of yet every event has been won by someone that hadn’t won a big tour event before 2016. Which is good. It means the new blood is coming through and not banging their heads against a glass ceiling.
The old guard, and it seems strange to write that, but the older crop of tour surfers, thirty and forty something legends as they all are, like Kelly, Taj, Mick and Parko, with the pleasing exception of Parko, are not in the mix. Kelly’s sitting at 28th on the rankings after three events. Mick’s taking the rest of the year off to Search and get his mojo back after his dramatic 2015, Taj announced his imminent retirement and will sign off in Fiji (better get those bars well stocked fellas) just Parko hangs on in there.
The current top 10 only has two guys over 30, Parko and Ace. The Brazilian storm has faded rapidly also. Toledo’s injured and Medina and ADR are having a shocker. At least Italo and Caio are holding their own.
Moving in to the Pacific, Kelly’s favoured hunting ground, might see age and guile beat youth, innocence and a bad haircut. But the way this year’s panning out the youth are dominating… We look forward to Fiji and Tahiti, there’s just Rio to get out of the way first.
ps: As for a WSL event at Kelly’s pool … word is it can generate one wave every eight minutes. And it only goes one way, so, it’d be riveting viewing. Don’t hold your breath.
WSL PRESS RELEASE
Sebastian Zietz (HAW), former elite tour competitor and injury replacement surfer on the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, has claimed victory at the third stop of the season, the Drug Aware Margaret River Pro.
With a solid swell in the six-to-eight foot (2 – 2.5 metre) range and offshore winds, Margaret River’s Main Break delivered for the final day of the men’s competition in Western Australia as well as the last day of the Australian leg, setting up a dramatic Final between Zietz and Julian Wilson (AUS).
Wilson opened the Final quickly with a score on the board, and continued to lock in more points under Zietz’s priority. Zietz responded by posting a 9.10, showcasing his trademark Hawaiian power and style. With only five minutes left on the clock, a set out the back gave Zietz the opportunity to make up lost ground. Wilson took off on the first wave of the set to separate his score, but Zietz answered back to take the lead. Zietz secured a 17.40 two-wave combined score to defeat Wilson’s 16.67.
“I am stoked,” Zietz said. “The pressure was on and I pulled that last maneuver in the white-water and made it. To win was definitely the goal I’d set for a long time. It is epic to win a CT event being against all the top guys and come out on top. I just want to dedicate this win to my family and everyone at home. Thank you everyone who has pushed me and helped me along the way.”
After narrowly failing to requalify for this season’s elite tour, Zietz has served as an injury replacement across the three Australian leg events. Today’s win now vaults the Hawaiian to No. 2 in the world heading into the remainder of the year.
“Falling off tour was really hard and made me feel like a kook, so I just went home and got a lot of waves to get back into rhythm,” continued Zietz. “I was psyched to hit the Qualifying Series and get the call up for the CT. It was an amazing contest. We had killer waves and good wind. Western Australia in general is epic.”
“I love the wave here and the crowd that comes down,” said Wilson. “That was a good final. Massive congrats to Seabass [Sebastian Zietz] for his first win. We were able to go blow for blow and have two great heat totals out there. I am happy to get a good result here and Bells was a better result than last year. I look forward to the rest of the year and to carry that momentum and fire into Brazil.”
Semifinal 1 saw Joel Parkinson (AUS) battle Wilson for a spot in the Finals. Parkinson fought hard to get the first score on the board, but after posting up the score, Wilson fired back to take the lead. Wilson and Parkinson went wave for wave, but Wilson’s 16.60 held strong to keep the lead. Parkinson was not able to find the score to close the 1.10 point gap.
“It was one wave I missed, I think Julian got a 6.90 point ride on it,” Parkinson said. “It did not matter in the end, but I think it really mattered for the rhythm of what waves were in priority. I am pretty angry at myself and I cannot believe I missed the wave. In a positive way, I am really happy that I am angry. It means I care a lot and that I let another opportunity slip by. I am fired up for the next one.” Italo Ferreira (BRA), the 2015 Rookie of the Year, faced Zietz in Semifinal 2. Zietz locked in a 7.17 to set the rhythm early. The two battled with each wave and the heat saw multiple lead changes throughout. Ferreira struggled to finish off crucial rides, allowing Zietz to take the lead. Zietz threw up a massive 9.10 to strengthen his score even further. Ferreira was not able to find the 9.50 required to take down the injury replacement.
“It was a good result again,” Ferreira said “I got the same result at Bells, and I am so happy that I have been surfing so well in these first three events. Now it is on to Brazil. I have amazing support there. My focus is to get another great result in Brazil.”
Matt Wilkinson (AUS), winner of back-to-back opening events in 2016 on the Gold Coast and at Bells Beach, retains the WSL Jeep Leader jersey with a commanding 24,000 points to Zietz’s 15,750 points as the world’s best surfers leave the Australian leg.
