Cornish surfer gets MBE for lifesaving over 40 years


Badlands ripper Martyn Ward, better know as ‘Turn’ or ‘Turnip’ has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for lifeguarding over 40 years.


‘Turn’ on the right right along with another St Agnes legend ‘Bunty’ (left) guarding in the 70’s.

Turn started lifeguarding his local beaches Porthtowan, Chapel Porth and St Agnes in the 70’s when they were run by the local council and has since worked as an RNLI Lifeguard Supervisor for 19 years managing the same area along the north Cornish coast.

‘I am so surprised and thankful that I have been nominated for this prestigious accolade. I was so not expected this, especially when the country is experiencing such challenging times and there are so many people working so hard to keep us all safe.

“I would like to accept this award, not just for myself, but also on behalf of the community, for all of those who over the years have contributed in making our seas, coast and beaches safer, whether they are a member of the public giving others safety advice, our Coastguard team, on our RNLI lifeboats, an RNLI lifeguard or a Surf Lifesaving Club member, voluntary and professional side by side.”

Quiksilver is proud to present the newest Young Guns film ‘Bay of Biscay’. Following the iconic content series from the early 2000’s, the new Young Guns episode showcases the best of the Quiksilver Global surf team talent aged 17-21.

The international cast includes:

Filmed around the beautiful wave rich Bay of Biscay in Europe after the Quiksilver Pro France 2021, the film follows the Young Guns scoring epic conditions at the beach breaks of Hossegor and a super session at Grand Plage, Biarritz. A trip to Spain sees the Young Guns get amongst the locals at Mundaka and the lesser-known waves of Asturias while enjoying the Spanish food and culture.

Wrapped up in 15 minutes of action-packed content, Young Guns Bay of Biscay provides a taster of the breakthrough talent these young surfers possess. Watch out for their names in the future.

Born and raised in Cronulla, Jordy Turansky follows in a long line of iconic Southside surfers. Legends such as Occy, Greeny, Matt Griggs, Richard Dog Marsh, or current WSL tearaway Connor O'Leary and hard charging Kipp Caddy. The area has always been synonymous with great surfers and big wave chargers.
Jordy seems to be fitting into both sides of the equation. Small in stature, but going big where it counts, Jordy has been sharpening his game on waves of consequence in and around his local reefs now for a few years.
To consider he didn't start surfing until he was 12, is a pretty impressive feat. 6 years in and he's swinging on waves that most of us will never even want to look at. Currently 18 yrs old, he was to finish his HSC school year at the end of 20, planned on going to lndo and Hawaii in 2021. but COVID and travel restrictions re routed his strike mission to local shores.
So he packed up his swag, his boards and wettys and headed out into the unknown with Kipp Caddy, (surfer) Sam Venn ( photog) Cameron Staunton ( filmmaker). From southern NSW, Victoria, South Oz, comes GAP YEAR.
Countless hours in the car, near death wipeouts at remote reefs and plenty of good times with good friends. Jordy has a large future ahead and we salute those who get up, get going and get amongst it.
