May 12 – 15 2016, 3rd Annual Approaching Lines International Festival of Surf presented by REEF comes to Cornwall. Bringing the very best international and homegrown surf films to the big screen, from European Premieres to multi award-winning features, the Approaching Lines International x Reef celebrates filmmaking on a global scale.
“We’ve worked with the very best filmmaking talent across the globe to curate a line up of the year’s most inspiring and exciting movies, bringing two night of stunning cinematography, cutting edge performance and inspiring documentaries to the Southwest,” says Festival Director Chris Nelson. “Hosted at the state of the art Lighthouse Cinema, Newquay, this year’s programme takes you on a waveriding journey that will stoke the fires for the season ahead. For many of the films this will be the only chance to see them on the big screen in the southwest, watched as they were intended to be seen, surrounded by an enthusiastic and amped crew.”
Accompanied by the inaugural Approaching Lines charity surf quiz night hosted at Gilmore’s on 12th May plus the UK’s most exciting alt wave riding contest, The Slyder Cup hosted at the Lusty Glaze shred wedge, 15th May, The Approaching Lines International presented by REEF is a celebration of the cream of contemporary surf culture. www.approachinglines.com
Boardmasters has today announced that applications are now being accepted for this summer’s Boardmasters Cornwall international surf competitions. This year, the world famous competitions will be included as part of the World Surf League Qualifying Series, featuring as a QS1000 event. Entries are now open for the WSL Qualifying Series (QS1000) and Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS1000). Applications must be submitted via the WSL Website where users must take out their WSL membership and enter.
Rob Gunning, WSL Europe Tour Manager commented, “It’s fantastic news to be bringing back a WSL QS event to the Boardmasters again. In addition to the LQS we will also witness the best of visiting international, European and British short board talents at Fistral Beach. The Boardmasters has a long history and WSL is proud to partner with the event and continue to promote professional surfing on British soil.
Established in 1981, Boardmasters is a 5-day event situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall – the surfing mecca of the UK, Fistral Beach where Boardmasters famous International Surf Competitions take place and arguably the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay. Last year saw Boardmasters welcome over 150,000 festivalgoers across its two sites over the 5 days of the festival. Watching surf films on the big screen with like-minded souls is a wonderful thing. Add in to the mix talks from legendary surfers, photographers and film makers with a big dose of Irish hospitality and you’ve got a recipe for a good weekend.
The short Irish edits part of the weekend is ridiculously boisterous and fun, especially as it morphs into the awards and getting lost in the pubs. Suffice to say we had a blast at the event last year. Sadly can’t make it this year due to mag deadlines but if you can make it … do. You won’t regret it.

Cut into a cliff-top near Porthleven and overlooking stunning Mount’s Bay, the Masked Ball is an immersive multi-level party kingdom populated by a kaleidoscope of cool and crazy characters, all dressed to excess.
Having recently announced plans for their ‘decade of decadence’ 10th anniversary festival, The Masked Ball can now reveal that Groove Armada, 2ManyDJs, Norman Jay MBE, London Elektricity and many more are also set to join their creative weekender on 20th – 22nd May.
The 10th birthday Masked Ball – this year staged over three days, each with its own very special vibe – will boast 12 elaborately-themed arenas,
There’ll also be whole new area modelled around ‘A Manor House’ – a stately home inhabited by the most debauched and demented members of the aristocracy, complete with its own unique take on the traditional garden fete and featuring bizarre attractions like live pig racing, a huge waterslide and hot tubs.
Shaping up as what’s set to be an incredible showcase of talent across the electronic music spectrum, the first to join festival headliners Basement Jaxx and Jungle is Groove Armada, who will return to Porthleven after making their festival debut back in 2014. Eclectic selector’s 2ManyDJs – the touring alias of Belgian outfit Soulwax – are also billed, whilst purveyor of ‘Good Times’, the legendary Norman Jay MBE, will deliver a masterclass in turntablism for partygoers seeking an injection of funk, soul and jazz. Elsewhere, an appearance from drum and bass institution London Elektricity is scheduled alongside MC Dynamite, with creative party-starters krankbrother no strangers to the festival’s themed proceedings.
With a host of support also coming from the likes of Solid Steel’s DJ Cheeba who will be providing an extra special tribute to the late great David Bowie, as well as Stockholm club scene stalwart Mad Mats, The Masked Ball’s immersive offerings will be just as impactful – providing a multi level party kingdom where themed venues range from the outrageous to the downright spectacular. Expect a myriad of rooms, dancefloors, dens, hidden bars and even bathtubs that are all themed around a majestic stately home, making The Masked Ball’s ‘decade of decadence’ milestone one certainly to remember.
