Jonathan Gubbins has his spots in the world that he travels to yearly and checks off his list. Teahupoo in Tahiti is one of them, and the Peruvian has been known as a stand out there whenever he stops on by. Here’s his most recent trip to French Polynesia where he linked up with filmmaker Justis St John that resulted in a few minutes of magic.

“Over the last couple years, I’ve been focused on chasing swells that focus on some of the best barrels in the world. Tahiti, Africa and Indonesia are on top of that list and once I saw this storm, I had a feeling this might be the one. I’ve been putting a lot of effort in with my equipment and surfing lately, and jumping on a last second flight to catch this swell, I was pumped to make the most of it.” – Jonathan Gubbins

The guys at Two Eyes Film have made some of our favourite surf films. Bringing the British deadpan sense of humour to the often overly serious surf world works well and if you’ve seen the Shaper or Freezing you’ll know what we’re talking about (if you haven’t scroll down and dig in).

The guys have a new project they’re launching on Kickstarter and you can help, details below, everything they’ve done so far has been gold so this should be incredible also. If you can afford to help some inspirational creative dudes out then get on over to Kickstarter…

Our new project – “The Outrider”

In 1979, North Shore shaper, Mike Strident shaped the most radical board ever ridden – “The Outrider”. Strident’s single fin design changed the game and took him to the very pinnacle of professional wave riding. But then “The Thruster” happened.

Made irrelevant over night by the three-fin movement, Strident’s shaping genius was lost to the dark shadows of the 80’s.

But 40 years later, snake-hipped Californian free surfer, Tommy Tonata is trying to revive “The Outrider” on the point breaks of Malibu and wants Strident to shape him a new board. But Strident would rather stab his eyes out with a spoon.

A surfer and a shaper from totally different eras go face to face; featuring Baja acid trips, talk-show melt downs, surf sequences scored by Tonata’s power axe, karate kick offs in the shaping bay and surfboard design head butts – it’s a comedy.

After “The Outrider”

The Outrider is a 26min standalone short film but it is also the pilot for our series “Inside The Ride”.

Our dream is to make a comedy series populated with a whole universe of characters from the surfing psyche. It’s about time surfing films had a mockumentary makeover. These are films for surfers so we are here to ask you to help us make Episode 1… “The Outrider”

How you can help?

We are trying to raise £10,000 to make the film which we will shoot in Carlsbad, California on June 1, 2017.

People can back our Kickstarter by following the link or heading to twoeyesfilm.com

About Two Eyes Film

Two Eyes is Rob Lockyear and Jeremy Joyce, childhood friends and lifelong surfing buddies.

We love surf films but they can get a little serious. Our surf movies are different.
We serve up the mystical icons of surfing folklore with a healthy dose of reality on the side.

If “The Office” and “Spinal Tap” made surf movies we wouldn’t have to.

We are the guys that brought you Freezing, #Vanlife and The Shaper.

Joss Ash: Indo

Mini trip to Indo with my brother and sister to get some sun. Surf Eat & Sleep and try to avoid any thoughts about the shark activity. Filmed by Reubs and Sunny over breakfast and lunch. music: Ben Khan, Drive.

Shane Dorian- Lemon Pepper

,

Don’t really need to encourage you to press play when the moving pictures above involve Shane Dorian. Like his fellow 40-somethings Kelly Slater and Rob Machado he is still as relevant and inspiring as he was twenty years ago when Momentum was getting played to death on the good old VHS.

Liam does Hawaii

Kernow junior Liam Murray Strout has been on a Hawaiian sojourn… Here’s his clip and thoughts.

So Hawaii, Where can i start really? It’s amazing! As soon as you get off the plane and into the airport, all you hear is Hawaiian style music all through the airport!

On the trip with me where a few younger kids; Will Masterman, Stan Norman and Jo Morris. They where all super funny kids and charged too on the bigger days out at Sunset! They all got some pretty big ones, especially Will, he definitely caught the biggest wave of the trip out there. We where staying pretty close to Rocky’s so thats where we surfed majority of the time. It was a super good wave and wasn’t too busy, maybe because there really wasn’t that many people around at the time of year in March.

I was only out in Hawaii for about 2 weeks on a surf trip with Surf Solutions and coach Joel Gray. It was an amazing experience going out there, we scored amazing waves, stayed at our own house and ate really good food the whole time. I’ll definitely have to go back there again and spend some more time out there and really see how good the waves can get.
