RIP CURL GROMSEARCH

Created in Torquay, Australia, in 1999, the Rip Curl GromSearch is a competition exclusively for young surfers under the age of 16 with its own unique caracter. It is held in various regions of the world at the same time: Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, New Zealand, USA and Europe, leading to an international final which traditionally takes place “Somewhere” in spring.


Rip Curl Europe has taken the initiative of changing the competition format for this 20th anniversary, to make it an even more exciting challenge for the under-16 surfers.


For the 2019 edition, each nationality will go through the rounds of the tour in their own country. The countries involved are France, Portugal, the United Kingdom and Spain. The under-16 male and female winners from each country will both be sent directly to take part in the world grand final “Somewhere” in spring 2020.

There will be a second chance, however, for surfers finishing between second and fifth places (inclusive) with a WildCard for the international final to be won in Peniche, Portugal, in a competition held for them, just before the Rip Curl Pro Portugal in October 2019.

Dutch and Italian surfers may also be selected to take part in this Portuguese round.

This 20th edition will also stress the importance of environmentally responsible behavior by our young surfers and their chaperones. Instead of having bottles of water distributed at the events, drinking water fountains will be available for everyone to refill their own reusable bottle, to promote the development of good habits. Recycling bins will be provided for each round, and the organizers will ensure that the ground rules of responsible behavior are respected in each country for each round.

The Rip Curl GromSearch is a real hotbed of young talent, having uncovered future World Champions such as Stéphanie Gilmore (7 times World Champion and current world #1 in women’s surfing), the Brazilian prodigy and WSL 2019 World Champion Gabriel Medina, and many others.

Rip Curl GromSearch 2019 will be another opportunity for young European talents to display their passion and challenge themselves in a fun and friendly atmosphere!

‘A Walk On the Beach’ – Stop Donald Trump’s Seawall!

Save The Waves Coalition and environmental partners urge careful consideration from Ireland’s national planning appeal board in the case against Donald Trump’s seawall in Doonbeg, Ireland.

If approved, the proposed project would allow two seawalls to be built on a public beach to provide ‘coastal erosion management’ for Trump’s private golf resort and cause profound negative impact on Doughmore Beach – a popular surf break and coastline for surfers and beach goers.

In December 2017, the Clare County Council approved the Trump International Golf Links’ (TIGL) project for the two seawalls (630m & 260m). Save the Waves and partners each filed separate appeals to Ireland’s national planning appeal board, An Bord Pleanála, outlining the multitude of technical and procedural issues presented with TIGL’s proposal.

Ultimately, the TIGL project would accelerate erosion in the areas adjacent to the seawalls and create a “domino-effect” scenario calling for additional defenses along the beach and sand dune system.

The inevitable need for additional seawalls would eventually leave Doughmore Beach with a sea defense with closer resemblance to the original TIGL project for a 15,000 ton, 3km seawall that was proposed and defeated in 2016 through an opposition campaign that gathered 100,000 petition signatures along with global spotlight and scrutiny.

A year later, the case is still left undecided. Save The Waves and partners continue to implore the Appeals Board to hear the case and recognize the severe implications of the seawall project on the surrounding coastline.

'Thank You Mother' is a cinematic journey of surfing, simplicity and appreciation. It is a film that isn't afraid to be beautiful, stylish and sincere. Produced by Torren Martyn and Ishka Folkwell with an original soundtrack by Nick Bampton. 'Thank You Mother' is narrated by award winning Australian film maker and life long simplist Albert Falzon, who made the seminal 1970 surf film 'Morning of the Earth'.

'Thank You Mother' began as a story about the act of creating a surfboard and the art of riding one. Exploring the connection between surfer Torren Martyn and his friend, mentor and surfboard shaper Simon Jones of 'Morning of the Earth Surfboards'. This naturally led to the doorstep of another friend and mentor, Albert Falzon and the film became more about connection, creativity and friendship, about surfing, being happy, and living simply.

Shot on location in South Africa, Indonesia and Australia, Ishka Folkwell's original and artful approach to film making captures something of the essence of these places, bringing them to life on screen. Nick Bamptons original musical score was composed for the film, so as Torren Martyn glides with style and power, carving beautiful lines into clean walls, the music echoes the mood and rhythm of his movements perfectly. Perhaps the most powerful element of this creative collaboration between surfers, shapers, filmmakers and musicians is the truth and beauty of Albert Falzons reflections on life. With humility and charisma he offers viewers the keys to a life of contentment, explaining that happiness comes not from having more or being the best, but from having good friends and being kind. 'Thank You Mother' is a film that celebrates appreciation of the simple things and stays with viewers long after they have watched it.
