London Surf / Film Festival has just dropped the line up for the 9th Annual LS/FF x VANS.

Hosted 9 – 12th October 2019 at the iconic Regent Street Cinema, London, the LS/FF team of ardent surfers, movie lovers and cultural commentators have assembled a handpicked line up of the very best films from across the globe that represent the pinnacle of contemporary surfing right now - hotly anticipated premieres, award winning features, and underground projects.

The carefully curated programme brings together documentaries to inspire, travelogues to stir the wanderlust, surfing that redefines the bounds of possibility plus a live A/V show to blow minds. Accompanied by Q+A’s and ‘Audiences with…’ some of the world’s most exciting and relevant surfers and creatives including icon Alex Knost, surfer / musician Lee-Ann Curren, big wave charger Dougal Patterson, award winning filmmakers including Spencer Frost, Chris McClean, Rick Wall, plus more special guests like Carve Magazine’s own Steve England it’s a celebration of the cream of surf culture.

“I’m super excited about the quality and diversity of this year’s line-up,” says LS/FF Director Demi Taylor. “From must-see documentaries that really get under the skin like the much anticipated Hobgood biopic And Two if by Sea, plus the stunning big wave tales like Satori and White Rhino these are stories about the people as much as the waves. Three years in the making, multi-award winning Jack Coleman has just dropped his new film Zone Frequency. Combining stunning cinematography and an epic soundtrack this is journey to the intersection of style, imagination and fun with some of the most radical and innovative surfers on the planet while Spencer Frost’s gorgeous A Corner of the Earth is a true tale of cold water adventures and frigid exploration. In an evening celebrating surf, sound and cinema we’re delighted to play host to the exclusive world premiere of Translate, the immersive audio / visual free surfing experiment from award-winning filmmaker Chris McClean and composer CJ Mirra. Performed live with musicians including Lee-Ann Curren, it captures the ephemeral nature of surfing, a moment that cannot be recreated.”

London Surf / Film Festival is bringing to the UK 2 World Premieres, 1 European Premiere and 6 UK Premieres. But it’s about more than that. LS/FF weaves together a true slice of surfing in the here and now, a showcase of the multi-layered world of waveriding. For many of the movies premiered, the festival will be the only chance to watch them as they were intended to be enjoyed – on the big screen, accompanied by a packed crowd of likeminded folk – the original “social media” experience. Humpback Whale Plays in the Surf with Surfers and Dolphins!

A juvenile humpback whale graced the line up in Western Australia playing in the waves with dolphins and surfers.

On this day the dolphins were playing around in the waves for a while so I decided to throw my drone up and capture the dolphins from the sky. To my surprise a large shadow appeared, which turned out to be a humpback whale. At this spot along the coast we often see humpbacks breaching out to see but rarely in this close to the surfers and waves.

The whale and dolphins seemed to have a connection and were happy interacting with each other inside the break. This allowed a few surfers to experience some magical moments with the large mammal.

After about 4 minuets a large set came through breaking on the whale. This seemed to spook it, unfortunately causing the whale to dive off back into the depths of the Indian Ocean. This can be seen in the last clip of the video.

This was a memorable encounter for me and one where I was just in the right place at the right time with my drone.

I got an email early this year from Joe Radano whom I’d never met before. I was injured so I couldn’t surf at the time, after a month doctors said I could get back in the water. I was planning to get the ferry and go to Sardinia, I thought of Joe but I didn't know exactly where he was, he could still be in Italy. I called him up and he was keen to hook up. It was all pretty easy, I went to pick him up in Santa Marinella, we finally met and went straight on to Sardinia. It was probably the coldest I've ever seen, there was snow everywhere. We got a couple days of waves and then it looked like the swell was going to hit the Roman coast and so of we went! After that, one more swell was coming, this time up north in Levanto. It was a last minute call and sure Joe didn't say no! On the charts we made a TRIANGLE in one week, this is what you get in winter time in the Mediterranean Sea.

Mason Ho shot over to California last weekend (September 13-14 2019) for Brand Day with Rip Curl and scored some fun waves at the world famous Wedge. Lots of wipeouts, and sea shells became flying razors. Thanks to the locals for filming.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Quiksilver. Its roots have always been firmly grounded in the surfing world, successfully combining art with performance and innovation. Staying true to these ethics, Quiksilver is supporting the first opus from the documentary series “Sounds of Surfing (S.O.S)” alongside Ed Banger and Seinheiser. Produced by LK RTEL and directed by Vincent Kardasik, S.O.S – A side : MOLECULE X NAZARÉ dives head first into the first stage of Molecules latest challenge: to compose an album at the heart of one of the worlds most dangerous waves. The unexpected combination of big wave surfing and electronic music.

THE CONCEPT OF SOUNDS OF SURFING (S.O.S)
February 2019, Nazaré: the musician Romain de la Haye- Serafini aka “Molécule” set himself a new artistic challenge.
The challenge: to record the sound of one of the biggest waves in the world, with which he would go on to create original and unique music.
His goal: to create music that emphasises the power of Nazaré, the legendary surf spot that combines chaos and grace and to source sound directly from the natural phenomenon.

Under the guidance of filmmaker Vincent Kardasik, the LK RTEL team and the worlds big wave surfing elite’s, Molecule literally submerged himself in the ocean. The Moroccan Quiksilver team surfer Othmane Choufani, accompanied him.

Over the course of this experience, Molécule completely immersed himself in big wave surf culture, learning the codes from those who take on extraordinary swells, building a bridge and uniting two universes, with one common denominator: adventure.

The release of the MOLECULE EP is scheduled for January 2020, as is the 26-minute documentary SOUNDS OF SURFING - A side: MOLECULE X NAZARÉ, which will be broadcast exclusively on quiksilver.com for 48 hours. A world premiere is also scheduled.

THE CREATION TIMELINE
February 2019: Recording the sound of Nazaré wave
June 2019: Molécule composes his works at Saint Jean de Luz (Basque Country), in the Quiksilver House, with a sea view.
July 2019: Mixing session at the Quiksilver Drop-In Studio
During the “Marées Alternatives” festival that went down on the 20th of July, Molécule and Pedro Winter aka Busy P mixed at an exceptional party.

Molécule, about this project: "Used to extreme lonely adventures, this project has brought me more than any other to my own limitations. These monumental, almost animal waves once again showed me all the power and fascinating beauty of nature. Listening to these elements is for me an almost vital, necessary need. It is also a senseless collective and human adventure where each surfer has literally risked his own life to help me capture the sounds at the heart of this monumental wave. I will be forever grateful to them: RESPECT.”

Vincent Kardasik, producer and movie maker: “Keeping in line with cinematographic documentaries, S.O.S is an extension of my work, with the objective of opening up the closed universe of big wave surfing and electronic music to the public, by humanising it”.

Pedro Winter, founder of the Ed Banger records label: "I have been following Molécule's work for a few years. Always attracted by his curious eye and his desire to surpass himself. The world is his studio, from a trawler to an igloo, we now find him at the foot of an ocean monster, Nazaré! Accompanying this kind of artist is a pleasure. I let myself be carried away right away, I already dream of us on the North Shore of Maui to meet Peahi.’’

For Othman Choufani, Quiksilver Team Surfer, the experience was totally unique “It sounds funny to say it, but we were literally fishing for sounds, to the rhythm of the big waves. I’d say what really struck us the most when we finished a session, was to hear the loud thud of the impact of the wave on the water. It was crazy to think that this project would allow us to listen to that at any time and even to dance to it!’
