Single Fin Shootout 2026: The Champs Speak
The Single Fin Shootout returned to Little Fistral in Newquay this September, and the retro single fins were out in force. Conditions were clean for the early heats, then the wind picked up and went onshore, and the little Fistral banks still held enough for a few long rights in the final.
The trophy went to Jowan Pegg and Lucy Campbell, two surfers with very different histories on a single fin. Jowan arrived as a runner up from the last time the contest ran. Lucy had never ridden a single fin before the weekend. We caught up with both of them to find out how it all unfolded.
No kooks win the Single Fin Shootout! How did it feel to lift the trophy?
Jowan: There were so many worthy winners so to come out on top felt great. I came runner up last time the comp ran so I was stoked to go one better this year round.
Lucy: It felt really special. I think because I’ve stepped away from competition, its so nice to compete without pressure; just to enjoy surfing, yell the other girls into waves and challenge myself in a different way. To then come away with the trophy was a really lovely little reminder that I’ll always enjoy the chase of surfing with a rashie on!

What was your journey to that win like (prep, heats, other competitors, wins, board, conditions)?
Jowan: I was actually freshly back from a Indo stint so it felt pretty dam cold haha. I’ve also been really enjoying exploring some more alternate shapes and different designs over the past few months which has given me a little bit of a different outlook on surfing.
Lucy: I put my arm around pretty much all the boards there and had a go on a few different ones, tried a few more mid length style one for my first heat. It was clean with shoulder high runners coming through so my aim was to get as many waves as I could, to get a feel for the board (and make the most of having that bank to ourselves!)! As the wind picked up through the day and turned onshore I had a little intel from Dale Foster on which board he thought I'd get on best with out there. It was a little soap bar- first wave I thought he’d stitched me up but, once it got into a pocket it had so much hold! The final was tricky but the little Fistral banks held and gave us a few long rights amongst the mush!!

Which other shredders impressed you?
Jowan: Toby Donachie, was looking scarily good all event!
Lucy: I didn’t catch many of the mens heats, I saw a few waves from Toby, Dale and Jowan so sick to watch their approach and see them flaring. I have to say it was the girls Future Legends that impressed me the most! They were taking off on bombs and chucking buckets! They all took to riding the single fins so well!

What is it that makes the Single fin shootout so special to you?
Jowan: The shootout is such a special few days. Bringing people who truly care about the sport for the right reasons together. Throw in some retro single fins and somehow always a pretty exciting forecast - You can’t go wrong.
Lucy: It’s the whole vibe at the event, how people give up their weekends to make it happen and to bring everyone together like that. Thank you so much to each and every one of you!!

Do you actually surf a single fin much / ever during the year?
Jowan: Nope! Haha. The last time I jumped on one was at the social event that SFSO ran in 2025. Although I must say, my marketplace screen time jumps up every year after the comp. But I’m still yet to call one my own.
Lucy: This was actually my first time surfing a single fin! I ride a lot of twinnys so I’m pretty used to switching between boards and taking a different approach but I’d LOVE to ride more single fins now! And really dial in that style of surfing.

Where exactly is the trophy going to live?
Jowan: It will call Mawgan Porth home until next year swings by and it’s time to pass it on (or not;) haha). Seriously though, that thing is frickin heavy, it’s quite a weight on the shoulders.
Lucy: It’s already up on the shelf in the kitchen- pride of place. Such a rad trophy.

Thanks to Jowan and Lucy for taking the time to answer, and to everyone who gave up a weekend to put the Single Fin Shootout on. The trophy now has a home in Mawgan Porth until next year comes around. Congratulations again to both of them.
