Wunderhorse are a rising UK rock band led by Jacob Slater, blending grunge, indie and raw lyricism. Their acclaimed second album Midas hit UK #6, leading to sold-out headline shows at Brixton Academy and Alexandra Palace. Recent singles like “The Rope” and “Rain” have earned major airplay on BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music. With standout sets at Reading and Leeds, Wunderhorse are fast becoming one of Britain’s most vital new guitar acts.
You might have spotted their striking logo projected behind them at recent gigs — but did you know it was created by none other than Sennen surfer/artist Seb Smart?
Seb has quietly built a name in the art world over the years, with work exhibited in places like Newlyn. We caught up with him to hear more about the image behind the band.
You must be stoked to see that image huge on stage?
It is amazing to see it up there — especially so big and bright. I’ve actually got something in the works with Wunderhorse that we’re keeping under wraps for now, but it’s going to be exciting.
How did it come about?
I had my first solo show in Newlyn, near Penzance, where I exhibited a bunch of paintings and a series of drawings of devilish entities. I sold most of them — except my personal favourite. As it turns out, that was the one Wunderhorse were drawn to.
Their manager got in touch, saying Jacob and the band liked one image in particular. At first, we weren’t sure which one. I’d met Jacob a few times before, so I reached out to him directly — and it turned out to be the piece I’d held onto. I was surprised it hadn’t sold, but maybe it was meant for something bigger. When it finally left me, it felt like a piece of my soul went with it.
What’s the story behind the image and its name? I’d rather not say too much. I like when people bring their own interpretations. There is a solid meaning, and it draws from personal experience — a journey of growth. But I think it’s fairly self-explanatory to anyone who spends time with it.
Are you working on anything new?
Yes — I’m continuing the original line of “everyday demons” that Wunderhorse liked. I always meant to, but I got sidetracked with some bigger pieces and another show not long after the first.Where can people find your work?
