Sunny skies, a small groundswell and offshore winds were on offer for the first event of this years’ three event Rip Curl GromSearch series. Jersey in the Channel Islands is a new event and organisers worked hard around the famously large tides to maximise the swell window with action happening between 8am and 9pm each day.

A stacked field of boys and girls from Wales, Scotland and England made the trip over the Channel to compete with the local Jersey and Guernsey talent. Titles and points in the Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 divisions were up for grabs with each surfers best two results from this and the events in Croyde Bay and St Ives determining the overall champion.

This year there’s an additional bonus that the overall series top U16 Boy and U16 Girl get an invite direct to the Rip Curl GromSearch International Final. As we look towards the next stop in Croyde on the 16/17th June it is Max Hudson and Alys Barton who are in the driving seat after their big wins in Jersey. Another key taking point coming out of Jersey was the strong depth of talent in the younger divisions that was on display – Lauren Sandland took out the the girls U12s win, Lukas Skinner the boys Under 12’s and Nikita Petrov the Under 14’s. The Smith Move of the Event award went to Travis Pearce for a rad air and Stanley Norman pocketed a Rip Curl GPS watch for being the fastest tracked surfer of the event.

Joel Gray – Rip Curl UK : The event was a big success. We’re really stoked to have been able to add this new event in a totally new location. The Channel Islands Surfing Federation really did a great job putting it on and its great for Rip Curl to be able to expand it’s support for junior surfers and the core scene.”
