Sunset Sons are back.

Sunset Sons are back.

Sunset Sons are back with a new single, new album and a sold out tour. Rory has had hair cut and Pete has been skating the legendary Southbank plus they are back to play what has to be the best Boardmasters lineup ever this summer!

Steve England caught with up Pete to find out what up.

1. How has the surf been down in the Hoss? Looked like an amazing winter, but kinda gone a bit pear shaped recently?
Hey guys, good to hear from yas again! Yeah, the surf has been consistent pretty much all winter – not too big, surfing out the front most days at Estagnots. Winter only lasted a few weeks and then back to Spring. It’s a great place to be when it’s like it was this year.

2. What you been up to since your last tour?
We’ve just had our heads down finishing off the last bits for the new album. It’s massive!!!

3. Where is Rory? Who is the new short haired singer in the band?
You’re only ever a month away from a bad haircut…maybe two in this case haha

4. So new tour, new single… excited? What can we expect?
Sold out tour, new single Say Hi out today, back to what we do best: being hungover, dragging our arses around the UK, smashing out banging shows. Expect that!!!

5. I saw the preview for ‘Say Hi’. Was that down the Southbank? Had Pete skated it before? It’s pretty iconic.
Nah, I’ve seen it but never been there with a board. Was a fun park and so glad they didn’t bulldoze it!! There was protests and stuff campaigning for it…I think it was gunna be developed into some corporate chain crap!! Such a win for the skate community.

6. Surf snow and skate lifestyle all feature in your vids… Are there any other themes?
Just trying to tell a story. ‘Say Hi’ is all about just doing what you do and not letting every man and his dog get ya down. Throwback to being a kid, just bombing around skating, not giving a shit about what’s next, where you are, where ya going, just doing it.

7. Anything else exciting happening this year that you can tell us about? I hear you are coming to Boardmasters? It’s cracking lineup this year maybe best ever!

Boardmasters!!! Mate, we’re playing the same f&@king day as Wu Tang Clan!!! Let’s grab a cider(s) there!!!
Problems’ and newly-released cut ‘Say Hi’ follow on from the band’s 2018 ‘The River’ EP and are the first taste of Sunset Sons’ forthcoming second album, the highly-anticipated successor to their UK Top 30 debut ‘Very Rarely Say Die’ which was produced by Jacquire King and James Lewis. The band’s debut saw them clock up considerable airplay across Radio 1 and Radio X and hefty tour mileage, playing headline shows at such venues as London’s Koko and Shepherd’s Bush Empire.

BOARDMASTERS ADDS NEXT WAVE OF INCREDIBLE ACTS FOR 2018

With the clocks going forward and summer just around the corner, Boardmasters has today revealed another wave of acts set to perform at Cornwall’s own surf and music festival, with 41 incredible acts added to this year’s world-class line up including Editors, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Black Foxxes and Gwenno. They join headliners Catfish And The Bottlemen, The Chemical Brothers and George Ezra, as well as the likes of Rae Morris, Stefflon Don and Annie Mac for what’s set to be the biggest Boardmasters yet. Taking place this year from Wednesday 8 – Sunday 12 August at Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach on the sun-drenched Cornish coast, tickets for Boardmasters are on sale NOW via the website.

Birmingham rockers Editors will be taking to the Main Stage hot on the heels of the release of their sixth top 10 album ‘Violence’. Since bursting onto the scene in 2003, Editors have established themselves as one of the UK’s premier bands, their sound evolving with every release. With soaring vocals from front man Tom Smith, crowds are set to be entranced by a set featuring a mix of much-loved songs that span an impressive 15-year career.

Iconic trio Fun Lovin’ Criminals also join the festivities. Led by frontman Huey Morgan, they soundtracked the 90s with hits such as ‘Scooby Snacks’, ‘Love Unlimited’ and ‘King of New York’ and have had a remarkable five albums chart in the UK top 20. With an eclectic music style that fuses hip hop, rock, blues and jazz together with R&B, punk and funk there’s something for everyone when the New Yorkers head to Cornwall in August.

Rock fans will delight in the sounds of Exeter-based trio Black Foxxes who recently released their lauded second album ‘Reiði’, whilst lovers of electro beats will be treated to a set from award-winning Canadian musician, DJ and producer Tiga, a man often hailed as one of ‘the world’s best mixers’.

Festivalgoers can also expect an epic and extraordinary set from unique songstress Gwenno. The multilingual daughter of a Cornish poet recently released her second album ‘Le Kov’ to critical acclaim. The album, written entirely in Cornish, is a euphoric and playful body of work suffused with rich melodies tackling issues of identity, politics and minority languages.

Elsewhere, world renowned DJs will be filling tent floors as they bring the hottest beats to Cornwall this summer. Dance fans can look forward to legendary German electronic beat maker Butch and Chicago icon Gene Farris back-to-back with DJ and producer extraordinaire Doorly. Staple favourites on the local dance scene Light Layers will be returning to Boardmasters for the third year in a row, bringing their unique blend of bass and banter to Watergate Bay.
Also joining this year’s epic line up is rising star Mellah, the Peckham-based singer and producer garnering attention with his endearing and alluring indie tunes, garage rocker King Tuff whose eagerly anticipated fifth studio album ‘The Other’ is about to drop and alt-pop band Flyte who released their long-awaited and impressive debut album ‘The Loved Ones’ last year.

Other unmissable acts announced today include Low Island, the Oxford quartet who have racked up millions of streams over their first two EP’s with their colourful jazz-inspired sound, East London troubadour Holiday Oscar making waves with his breezy folk songs, and all the way from Byron Bay ‘tropical ambassador’ Bobby Alu, the singer, ukulele strummer and drummer known for his fusion of smooth harmonies, Polynesian inspired rhythm and unassuming summer grooves. Joining them are lo-fi psychedelic punk rock duo The Lovely Eggs, Sons of The East, Adam French, Samm Henshaw, Me and The Devil, Charlotte Carpenter, Josh McGovern, Sam Sweeney, Caro, The Lottery Winners, FEET, Lady Bird, Rental Wives, Annabel Allum, Bad Parents, HAUS, Colouring, LUCIA, Rews, Fizzy Blood, Trudy & The Romance, The RPMs, Bryde, DJ Proof, Shapes, Lion and The Alive.

THE AMAZONS AND MORE ANNOUNCED TODAY FOR

CORNWALL’S OWN SURF AND MUSIC FESTIVAL

Fistral Beach / Watergate Bay, Cornwall | Wednesday 8 – Sunday 12 August 2018

As the sun rose at Watergate Bay this morning, Boardmasters announced the first wave of acts set to take to the stage in 2018, including the first Main Stage headline act. Cornwall’s very own surf and music festival will play host to legendary dance music duo The Chemical Brothers alongside some of the most exciting and diverse acts in the world right now including Craig David, Annie Mac, The Horrors and The Amazons. After 2017’s bigger-than-ever, sell-out success, Boardmasters returns to the sun-drenched Cornish coastline for another year, with the hottest surf and music action in the UK. Boardmasters runs from Wednesday 8 – Sunday 12 August 2018 across Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay, tickets are on sale NOW via the website.

Get ready to dance with The Chemical Brothers. With no less than six UK number 1 albums to their name, electronic pioneers Ed Simons and Tom Rowlands have been thrilling crowds for over two decades. Known for their electrifying sets and hits such as ‘Hey Boy Hey Girl’, ‘Galvanize’ and ‘Go’, The Chemical Brothers will bring the biggest party of the summer to Watergate Bay as they headline the main stage on Saturday 11 August.

Boardmasters is also stoked to announce 12 more acts for 2018. Taking to the Unleashed stage for two huge headline sets are comeback king Craig David, who will present TS5, his unique hybrid set which sees him DJ, MC, and sing accompanied by a live band, as well as BBC Radio 1 tastemaker DJ Annie Mac. Also announced is prolific Brit band The Horrors riding the wave of their latest chart success, Top 10 album ‘V’. Crowds can also expect unforgettable sets from critically acclaimed rock quartet The Amazons, New Zealand’s premier fusion band Fat Freddy’s Drop, hotly-tipped Declan McKenna, vocal powerhouse Tom Walker, and indie rock star Sam Fender, who will be returning to the stage after two dazzling Boardmasters sets in 2017. Festivalgoers can also expect world class DJ sets from Phonox’s resident DJ HAAi, and electronic duo Bicep, who will join The Chemical Brothers for a weekend of unforgettable life-affirming performances from the biggest names in music, in the most stunning festival setting the UK has to offer.

In addition to the incredible musical offerings, punters will also be able to enjoy classic pub banter during The Keg & Pasty stand-up comedy hour, and, for those looking to fully immerse themselves in Cornish life, language workshops will be returning, teaching local dialect to inquisitive minds.

This year, Boardmasters welcomed 50,000 festivalgoers to enjoy world-class music from headliners Two Door Cinema Club, Jamiroquai, Alt-J and more atop the picture-perfect Watergate Bay. While the UK’s surf mecca Fistral Beach drew surf lovers in droves with record numbers watching the international surf competition over five days. NME described Boardmasters as “a perfect weekend mix of sun, surf and music in Cornwall” while The Financial Times said Boardmasters is “fast becoming one of the UK’s most enticing summer music festivals”. The Cornish Guardian commented that Boardmasters 2017 was “a resounding success” and the Western Morning News called it “one of Cornwall’s coolest events.”

Inspired by the freedom, adventure and creativity of surfing and music, Boardmasters was born in 1981. Expect parties that run late into the night and a beautiful beach to recuperate on during the day. The 5-day event is situated across two stunning locations in Cornwall – the surfing mecca of the UK, Fistral Beach, where world class International Surf Competitions take place, and arguably the most stunning location in the country to watch live music, Watergate Bay. Last year the grassroots surf and music festival welcomed over 150,000 festival goers to sunny Cornwall. Book your tickets here.

See you at the beach!
