A Euro surfer’s escape since the ’70s, Sri Lanka has plenty of waves, picture perfect beachies and lots of culture to experience. Most of the island is now over the tsunami and back in working order. There are two distinct seasons: December to March when the wind is offshore on the west coast breaks of Hikadua and Midigama, and the southwest monsoon (June to October) when Arugam Bay and the east coast goes off.
It’s a long flight, but relatively easy to get to, and there are plenty of good waves for beginner to intermediate surfers. Arugam Bay and several of the other spots are great for advanced surfers, but don’t tend to get the punch of Indo. Everyone speaks English and there are plenty of cheap places to stay and eat. It’s a great tropical retreat!
