sessions

The organisers of the 2008 Rip Curl Boardmasters are pleased to announce that alongside premier surf, BMX and skating action will be seven days of live music beginning with the now infamous, Foster’s Beach Bar sponsored Beach Sessions, showcasing the best up and coming talent currently creating a buzz on the music scene alongside some established names. Last year’s sessions brought you 7 consecutive sell-out nights of live music from the likes of Enter Shikari, Seasick Steve and this year’s Boardmasters Unleashed headliners, The Pigeon Detectives.

Kicking things off on Monday August 4th will be a very special impromptu live set from rock poppers Elliot Minor. The classically trained three-piece are no strangers to the live scene having supported everyone from McFly to Simple Plan. The band’s infamous blend of pop and punk has earned them an ironclad fan base as well as their own headline tour which kicked off in March. The band’s free show at this year’s Rip Curl Boardmasters will be one of many special guest appearances taking place in the trade village.

If Elliot Minor wasn’t already enough, Monday night will see South Wales’ Kids In Glass Houses take to the stage as the first official Beach Session set of the week.
Being hailed as a breath of fresh air on the post-hardcore scene, not concerned with the current zeitgeist or the colour of their nail varnish, the valley boys have nailed their reputation after high profile support slots to the likes of Lostprophets and Killswitch Engage, a huge fan base accumulation and their Roadrunner released first single being A listed at Radio One.

Tuesday will see indie-rockers British Sea Power take to the stage for an unforgettable live show. The Brighton based foursome have reached major critical acclaim this year with their latest album ‘Do You Like Rock Music’ selling over a million copies and receiving major praise from some of the UK’s best loved music titles. “Stadium-sized melodies and exquisite songwriting,” said MOJO. The NME was in accord, “Out of this world..288.” The Sunday Times simply stated that BSP were, “The best band in Britain.” Their show at this year’s Boardmasters will be their most intimate this summer with main stage slots confirmed at the likes of Glastonbury and T in the Park.

Battersea born MC Rodney P has collaborated with everyone from Roni Size to Bjork combining his West Indian inspired reggae beats with home grown rhymes of South London. Alongside Rodney P will be The Nextmen, the hip hop producing duo are no strangers to the live scene having worked with everyone from The Pharcyde to RCB Unleashed headliners Groove Armada.

Thursday’s which line-up, is hosted by Rip Curl Girls Go Surfing, will see more eclectic artists taking to the stage including local hero Seth Lakeman. The Devonshire singer-songwriter has been awash with publicity since the release of the Mercury Music Prize nominated album Kitty Jay back in 2004. Since then with serious plugging from the likes of Jools Holland and Billy Bragg, Seth Lakeman has established himself as one of the most exciting folk singers on the UK music scene as well as actually being named singer of the year at 2007 BBC Folk Awards. With a new album due later this month this will be Lakeman’s first official Cornish date this year.
