Surf Action has recently completed their third residential for combat veterans suffering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The local charity has been developing the residential programme since December 2011. These are funded by Peter Stevens from The Lotus Group who has been a regular visitor to Cornwall since the 1960s. After seeing an article in a local paper he stepped forward and offered support and funds to purchase a minibus and fund three weeks of respite for combat veterans.

Surf Action has twice returned to Prussia Cove due to the relaxing feel of the natural environment and the coastal setting. Director Russ Pierre states “The weeks are about helping the veterans move forward whilst providing an active week of surfing, walking, swimming, yoga, horse riding and art workshops”.

The most recent week held between the 23rd -29th June welcomed six combat veterans from as far as Lowestoft in Suffolk. Combined with veterans living locally here in Cornwall it was a hugely successful week. The objective of these weeks is to introduce the tools needed to move forward in life and provide ways of coping with the everyday pressures and impacts of PTSD.

RAF crewman Scott Todd joined the group whilst awaiting medical discharge due to PTSD commented, “When I arrived with Surf Action I was apprehensive but very quickly I felt an ‘Awareness’ and ease in their company. No feelings of trying to explain myself existed. On the contrary without even speaking, a feeling of understanding was present. Awareness, understanding, and a knowledge of ‘what we have all been through’ is very apparent, with not even a spoken work being needed. I think it makes Surf Action a VERY special group with a kindred spirit. I’m very grateful and very humbled to be invited in to be a part of that”.

Surf Action will return to Prussia Cove in October the final residential week of 2012 that will focus on helping the entire family. The charity a continually seeking sponsorship to continue these residential weeks that help to remove feelings of isolation and bring like minded veterans together.
