Operation Strap On
Carve caused a bit of stir back in February when we leaked a report on Twitter that D+C Constabulary had hatched a closet plan to target surfers with loose equipment code-named “Operation Strap On”.
Apparently lots of surfers have been losing their loads recently and the Police plan a stiff policy to head off premature ejaculations and prevent sticky situations on the M5 and A30 from Easter.
News of “Operation Strap On” went viral with Police media officers forced to answer hard and penetrating questioning. A spokesman denied the codename “Strap On” saying there must have been a cock up as the Chief Constable would come down hard on his men if this was the case. However they did confirm Police would be coming out on the beat and cruising the south west flashing down surfers with large baggage, penalising loose thrusters, and anything else that came to hand.
“People very often under estimate the down force required to keep a surf board secured to a roof and we face many instances every year of boards becoming loose and lifting off vehicles into what are very busy routes – M5 and A30 in particular.” The spokesman said “Advice is to secure your board, make regular checks throughout your journey and if you do feel luggage becoming loose to stop in a safe location and re-secure it. The whole aim of this is to reduce road traffic collisions and, not only make the highway safer, but also reduce hold ups during the busiest times of the year.”
Inuendo and japery aside this is a serious operation and surfers could face fines and penalty points for unsecured load and driving without due care. The investigation may also include surfboards inside cars. So the message is if you are trolling Devon and Cornwall this summer and want to avoid meeting man in uniform in layby; Strap On!
