Joey Buran is to spend the next two years coaching the British junior squad, with the aim of improving Britain’s global ranking as a surfing nation.
The US Surfing Hall of Famer former Pipeline Masters Champion, and USA’s most successful surfing coach – has flown out to Peru this weekend to join the Calypso British Junior surf team at their training camp near Lima, as they make their final preparations for the 2011 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Games, which run from 21 to 29 May.
Buran has agreed to commit himself to coaching the British team for the World Junior Surfing Games for the next two years, working alongside British coaches on Surfing GB’s squad development programme.
Buran’s new role with Surfing GB comes after two successful years as head coach with Surf America during which he took the USA Surf Team to medal winning results in the ISA world rankings. Under Buran’s leadership, the PacSun USA Surf Team earned three ISA team medals in as many competitions: copper at the 2008 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships; silver at the 2008 ISA World Surfing Games; and copper at the 2009 Quiksilver ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.
After dedicating an incredible amount of time, energy, and passion to Surfing America and the USA Team program, Buran has now decided to apply his considerable coaching talents to the Calypso British Junior Surfing Team.
“I am very excited about coaching the Calypso British surf team at the forthcoming 2011 ISA World Junior Championships in Peru. I have already had the opportunity of working with some of the team riders, and I know first hand this is a very talented team! Most of this team is also ISA experienced so we have a good idea of what to expect and what it will require to achieve success. We will be focused, ready to compete and expect some strong performances and good results. Simply put, we will be looking for our best possible individual and team effort in Peru in May – let’s do this!” said Joey Buran.
“Joey has been a tremendous coach in the States – he has transformed the USA team and we are very excited that he has agreed to spend the next two years with our British junior team. This is an outstanding opportunity for the team and for British surfing,” said Chris Thomson, Chairman of Surfing GB..
Calypso Soft Drinks which supports the Junior Surf Team commented “This is a very exciting development for the team and for British Surfing. We are awestruck to have Joey Buran coaching our team, it is a real honour and we hope he can achieve great things for British surfing.”
